What are the steps for respraying an area of the bodywork.

Your going to struggle matching that. There are plentyof tutorials on t'internet but that looks like a proffessional needs to take a looksy.

I thought I could get away with it. It does not have to be a spot on match I just want to stop it from getting worse.

That looks like the lacquer coat is gone, so a careful recoat using clear lacquer may fix the problem. You need to be careful to prepare the edges to so that you get a smooth finish and not a 'step' effect. If the colour coat is damaged and needs to be repaired, then you need to get some colour paint mixed specifically for you car. Don't buy off the internet using a paint code, the colour match won't be good enough. A good auto factors can mix paint for you using something like the petrol flap for colour matching. Even still, it's very difficult to get a finish that can't be detected.

Yeah the lacquers gone. I might just give to a body shop.
