It's a vibration damper, and to balance the rear up too.
Only remove this if your going to replace it with a battery in boot mod.
Wheres the pics???

Do not think about throwing it out mate and replacing it with nothing but air, you'll get vibration through the rear

In a few words,Lee,it is to re-shell the 2.7.... winkeye
That had all new M-tec suspension 12 months ago,and the four door shell is now scruffy, scuttle rot, rear arches inner and outer.
For a bit of fun I had a search on DVLA's site for J11NES(JANE'S),but it's long gone!

:ttiwwp: :P

Don't remove the rear weight, mine was missing but bought a replacement. It is very heavy 8O but BMW wouldn't have put it in if it didn't help with something :)

i believe it's actually a harmonic damper.
i have also read that some later BMW cab's used a special battery that doubled up as the harmonic damper

if this is the case, i guess it should be sprung / damped? unless it just alters the resonant frequency of the shell, which is in essence a spring with a mass, so likes to resonate

now you mention it i think it was.

i'm sure it was that one but i could be wrong as i'd been out in the sun nearly all day & i felt like i was on a slow roast.

i'll keep my eye's open for it next time i'm over your way.

still a good looking car though.

you can seal them from the other side ....just use black sealant (a little on the fingertip) otherwise just give it a good scrub and reproof or renovo do a back to blue re-colourant

It can be repaired, but the only way of doing it will result in the stiching been seen, and if you can live with it mate, get it done.

The vents were pressed by a compnay called "Cool Louvres" into the bonnet, no nasty plastic.
As for bodykit, it is a very personal choice, and to be honest, I do like them without.
Wheels should be near to oem look and as for the "Big "Speakers, i have nice sound, but only for me to listen, not half the country

Is the harmonic damper for RHD cars only and/or facelift cabbies? Is it under the trim on the right hand side? I have not looked under the trim but I have spoken to the two previous owners and they have not seen it.

Thanks for the help

It's under the trim on the right hand side of the boot, i'm pretty sure it's in all cabby's but not 100% sure :)
