Couldn't face measuring pistons this weekend, so cracked on with the mould for the front wing.

It weighs an absolute TON!

Fingers crossed that it releases from the original wing too

I'm hoping that the materials for the engine mounts will be here next weekend so I'll have a good amount of work to do at the parents' gaff. I keep going there of a weekend and not really having a plan of action so I just mill about achieving nothing

THE PUMP IS ORDERED!

All for the princely sum of £550!

Cheif advantages being super reliable oil supply, the sump being miles away from the ground and made of steel so it shouldn't get hit by anything and should crack if it does.......and a not insignificant amount of extra power :D

That is just the pump though. Gotta make all the fittings, drive, sump and so on before it's a dry sump system

Tiny update; made the jig for my new and mega stiff engine mounts today. Hopefully have the new mounts made tomorrow if I don't run out of welding gas :D

Didn't get as far as I'd have liked today as I had to fix my bike for work tomorrow. Bloody Shimano! Needed to modify a part that should've just dropped straight into place, then modify some other parts so that they'd fit, and finally apply a brutal amount of force to make a chain fit! All of which took about four hours! :(

Anyway, here's the car pics

Starting the jig for the engine mounts:

Little bit further with the jig:

The new engine mounts, you can see how these will locate the engine much better than the standard ones :D

And this is as far as I got this weekend :)

Alex, when you finish this project have you thought about what your going to do next seen as you will then have alot of spare time on your hands.

Maybe something like this?

Ooooooooh, that must've cost a LOT!

Any idea how much power it makes? :D

I have been having nasty thoughts about buying a Skyline GTS, just to get some straight6 turbo thrills again....especially now I don't need an economical car :D

He heee! Quite chuffed with this!

I've released the original wing from the mould (destroying the wing in the process!) to leave this:

Image

Most importantly though, it's a BIG thumbs up for Meguiars Mirror Glaze release agent! It gives you the surface finish of your panel, and releases incredibly easily!

There's a bit of paint stuck to the mould unfortunately, looks like rust was lurking under the surface of the paint, but other than that, I'm pretty pleased :D

Mundane update for today, ordered the air filter for a new V8 M3 from BMW.

Plan is to make a nice carbon fibre enclosure for it which draws only cool air from behind/beneath the headlight and ducts it to the turbo.

Really don't like the look of cone filters and I figure that there must be some redundancy built into the 400bhp M3's filter so it shouldn't prove restrictive on my engine :)

Crikey, the new M3's filter is BIIIG!

Looks like it'll fit behind the headlights with a decent amount of room for air to surround it though.

I've got as far as making the polystyrene base and one side for the enclosure so far.

Woo hoo! Got the engine mounts finished (except for painting!) today.

Give a nice little bit of extra clearance to the smaller turbo's oil drain too which is a plus :D

 hockey pucks are probably a lot less effort! :)

Had a measure of the standard pistons the other day and reckoned that they're 0.3mm too high :(

This is confirmed by the compression height marked on the box which says they're 0.3mm too tall too.

Thinking I might get a 0.3mm decomp plate and be done with it as the easy way out.

from memory, the M30 head gasket is standard at 0.7mm thick or can be bought at 1mm thick to suit a skimmed head. Hopefully you can get a similar slightly thicker one for yours? i guess you're getting an uprated one anyway?

That's cometic and they don't have stock, they make to order OR vac do them off the shelf.

Stock M20 HG is 1.63mm, oversize is 2.03mm, having swapped a few I should know

I would change pistons alex, it's strange how Willg had the exact same issue with his custom pistons, weird.

There are a couple of options available I think.

I can get an ali decomp plate made up which would be 0.5mm thick and would happily live on my standard thickness MLS to give the desired clearance.

I can get a copper layer made up to sandwich in the MLS which would apparently allow me to get a bit closer to the 0.3mm I need.

Could get another MLS with the extra material added, or finally could have a copper HG made up and be done with it that way.

First things first though, as Mike at Ferriday pointed out yesterday, I need to properly measure the chamber and piston volumes to see what CR I've actually got. If they're ballsed up the compression height, what else is wrong with these pistons?!

Did Will buy his pistons from TEP by any chance?

No idea BUT ask Ant as he had his fingers on that lump as a zoner bought it and it was built at A-Tech IIRC, no idea what happened to the pistons.....

TEP is ringing a bell but I honestly can't be sure, is Willg still about?

I was about to recommend Ferridays, he knows his stuff for sure.

Well, it was about 18 months ago so I can't imagine them doing anything about it, and shipping things back and forth to the states is gonna cost a fortune too.

So there are two options I guess:

1, get a decomp plate and that kind of thing
2, get a 320i crank and some S50 rods, the combination of which would drop the pistons down by 2mm but only give a 2.3litre engine.

Certainly the cheapest route is gonna be the plate, but I'm having silly thoughts about a stupidly high revving motor with the shorter throw and longer rods....although I've no idea if the M52B20 crank is forged, and it'd not be as relaxed to drive.

Think the answer is a plate isn't it!

or can you use a b28 crank and 130mm rods?

Or another combo to lose a little cr? , after all this work you can't stick a weak link bang in the middle buddy.

Also can you work out what application your pistons are for? Then atleast you could sell them on if needed.

You can also have your pistons machined 0.3mm

if you can get a CNC friend to do it the overall shape of the top would remain the same.

Can you not just run slightly higher compression or do they hit the head?
With great challenges comes great engineering.

I say do the 2.3 and rev the b0ll0cks off it! lol its not like you are going to have to worry about spool times! lol

Interesting you have problems with your pistons from TEP. I ordered my custom ones from there also 8:1 CR, moly coated skirts and ceramic coated crowns...pistons turned up non-coated. Not happy - but as you said, sending back and forth to USA is a PITA (especially from Australia!)

The build looks awesome though - you planning on making any "runs" on CF stuff.... would be interested ;)

He hee, has been quiet while I think how to resolve the piston problem.

Got the gear together to actually measure the CR this weekend (rather than trusting that it's right!).

Once that's done, next step is getting a suitable HG and then the build can continue.

How are you going to measure the compression ratio? By measuring the swept volume and the combustion volume? We used burettes and glass at uni and measured the volume of the top of the piston and the heads combustion chamber volume.

Exactly that, plate of glass over the cylinder (having moved the piston down by a measured amount!) and plate of glass over the head.

Probably use white spirit or something like that.

Then add the volume that the gasket adds and see what's what :)

Oh, didn't manage to get the volumes checked unfortunately, but did take a couple of pics of the bollocksed up front wing. I'm still liking the black top and carbon middle effect myself, whadda people reckon?
