Hi all

The touring I picked up last week has apparently just had a fresh re-spray... it was however a DIY job.. in the case that it was done in the owners very large workshop.. with a very large compressor.. not rattle cans..

The coverage is excellent.. no overspray.. so quite impressed.. however.. the finish has a kind of satin feel to it.. like the laquer has bloomed. How can I bring it back shiny?

T-cut? PC? Colour sanding?

Any ideas?

Cheers

maybe he has not laquered it and just polished or compound it back after the last coat of paint.

First thing is to find out what he painted it with.. Was it 2pac or Acrylic? The reason I ask is, acrylic always is a little dull when painted and needs to be buffed to bring it up.... However it will always dull over time, and needs constant polishing to keep it looking at its best.... This is why we now paint cars with 2pac... There can be many reasons 2pac is dull. Such us blooming like you said.. Blooming occurs because the cold.. The panels need to be warm around 20 degrees to avoid this.. This is why we paint in a temp controlled booth.. If its bloomed then its finished and farked cant be fixed needs a respray.

Another reason can be he baked it to early and got to much heat but this only dulls it a very small amount not really noticeable..

And the most common reason is to much thinners in the paint.. basically the he was looking for a peel free finish and this is easily done by thinning the paint right out... A good painter does not need to do this by the way. Like I said its the easy way.

For the 2 above they will need a ;olish to bring them up Dont use a compound cutting polish use a medium cut polish followed by a swirl remover then a glaze and a wax.

The other is solvent boil....Tiny little bubbles very very very small... To much heat to much material.... If this is the case then its rooted too..

First thing is to find out what its painted with, and put up some pics..

After having my car inspected after the damage that occured yesterday.. straight away the bodyshop guy noticed that flat paint..

Its not been laquered at all! So they told me if they repair the wing and the door they'll be like new super shiny but the rest of the car is flat dull and will stick out like a sore thumb! :?

It would appear like its a case for another complete re-spray?! Which I wont do.. doesnt seem worth it..

I think I'll end up repairing the damage myself.

Dont trust what the body shop tells you, as they are simply after another job... Get a few opinions.

Clear will not rub of with thinners.

Good post! Thanks. I take it you paint as a profession?

OP- what colour is the car btw?? Is it metallic? Flat colours are not often lacquered.

Question for you M_jermyn- When I have painted parts in the past I have had problems with the paint+laqcuer "cracking" slightly in small areas. What causes this? The cracks are minute and look like badly cracked glass.

Yeah I have 2 trades, Panel beater and Auto Spray painter. I now work as a paintless dent repairer... When you have a passion for cars it makes sense to do it as a job..

This is called crazeing, there are many reasons for this. you might of put to much paint on it, you might of mixed it up wrong eg. to much hardener. They are the most common ones.. I assume you are using 2pac.

You are right about non metallic cars not having clear, eg white.

However it is not always the case as more manufactures are using the C.O.B method (clear over base) such as VW Audi Merc.
