I haven't investigated yet, but my brother's 316i sounds suspiciously like a diesel so I'm guessing there's a leak somewhere round the exhaust manifold... (it still goes very well for a 1.6, so I reckon the cam etc is fine) Is this a common prob on m40s? & are the gaskets difficult to change? Snapped studs likely?

Never had reason to work on one, so I'm just looking for pointers from someone who has really!

Cheers

The exhaust manifold off my M30 was welded in 2 places and cracked in a 3rd place, the cast iron used is very brittle and will crack if hit, they can smash if dropped too. Have a look round the entire manifold for black markings where gas could be escaping.

Exhaust studs are a bugger to get off, always very rusty and very hard to get to, investigate other stuff 1st like the downpipe flange and the manifold body 1st

Cheers Jos :thumb:

Was just wondering if there was anywhere particularly likely to go on the m40 really...?

I had to get the gasket replaced on mine as it had torn, and was blowing. Think the most awkward job is removing the nuts without snapping the studs.
