I was wondering if anyone new if speakers can be mounted in the front footwell? (Opposite where the factory speakers are mounted.)
I've got a 318i and was hoping to fit a pair of 6x9's in the carpet area beneath the main centre console (however I am a bit worried about drilling and cutting without knowing what is under there!)

Does anyone know what (if anything) is in this area? I've looked all over the place and can't find out if anything important runs up there. Is it just empty boxing?

If i was you mate i wouldnt bother with all the time, hassle etc of putting 6x9's in the front.

Either sell them to found some components or just leave it for now.

Worth bearing in mind that if you place em opposite the standard speakers, they're in totally the wrong place to get any decent sound to you... You'd be much better off with some door builds.

& I'm not quite sure where you're thinking of putting them, but it sounds like you mean the transmission tunnel or bulkhead, both of which are structural, & you really don't want to start chopping them up!

Think the gearbox might get in the way

Get a good set of components, Infinity come recommended for use with Alpine amps/headunits and sound pretty good.

Not true. Ok, well yes the are the king of chav speaker but a half decent set can sound very good properly installed. certainly much better than any 13cm... I know cos I've got both, 13cm seperates up front and chav by nines in the back.

I've spent lots of time listening, changing the dampening and generally playing with the setup and the chav by nines (I like that phrase) are just better.

eM30, if you've got them anyway and just want to fire them in you could try a basic door build.

start with placey's guide in the "Articles" section and pay attention to cable polarity, solid mount and good sound dampening for the rear.

Long term there's many ways to do a good setup

My setup currently is:

Kenwood 4x45W RMS head
6 CD changer (Cheers Ant!)

6x9 in the back mounted on 6mm painted ply board. solid and doesn't look too bad.

13cm mid/bass in standard location
tweeters up on the dash in the corners of the windscreen.
old t-shirts packed in all round for deadening front and rear.

Excluding Head and CD total cost 130squid.

It sounds pretty damn good considering the money but I'm a bit of a fascist when it comes to sounds quality so I've got stage two planned as follows.

Amp up the rears.

Move the tweeters closer to the main drivers in the front to balance out the eq, it's too top-endy with them right next to my ears and the mid/bass down below.

Install proper crossovers in the front. tweeters are just running off a capacitor atm so high freq. gets sent to the mid/bass speakers.

Go to town with the sound deadening all round. proper dynamat. and lots of it*

* have a feeling that the rears 6x9s sound nicer not quite fully deadened but I'm gonna play with that. may just be the when they're really tightly enclosed they just need the extra power from the amp... we'll have to see.

Anyway hope that give you a little to think about. there's many way to go about it.
