Alot of beautiful, deserted, fast, wide, safe roads up there that would have 50 limits slapped on them!

Is it even going to make a difference by signing it? I wonder how many votes will be required in or to actually make a difference. The whole nation perhaps?

I'm not convinced by this online petition thing at all - far from being democratic, I think it's a mechanism for pushing all the 'non-believers' into one place where their opinions can be discarded as a job lot. I think there is something slightly sinister about a government that invites criticism, but only via a side door. I haven't signed, as I simply don't see the point - I actually think it's more likely to be detrimental. If something really bothers you, it's going to take more than a click of a mouse to prevent it.madaboutthe30 wrote:Is it even going to make a difference by signing it? As far as a 50mph national speed limit goes, is there actually any evidence that it is at all likely to come into force? I can't believe it's a priority for anyone other than a few cranks.

But, think of the fuel savings - they will reduce carbon emissions by a LARGE percentage while saving the lives of 42324 hedghogs per year. Everyone likes hedghogs! Also, the most dangerous impacts are head on crashes on single lane roads. Think of the number of children's lives we will save by making sure that school run X-5s only hit each other at a combined speed of 100mph instead of 120! Princess Diana crashed at 120mph and we should never let that happen again! Think of the children! Think of the Princess of Wales!

That's exactly it - those 'good men' who would otherwise do something about what they see as wrong are persuaded not to - in the belief that signing a worthless petition is good enough. If you want to register your displeasure about something, at least go to the trouble of hand writing a letter to your MP - the attitude of the powers that be will be to assume that the great unwashed don't really care if all they can be arsed to do is make a few mouseclicks. A letter probably won't help either, but it has more potential than one of these daft whingers' lists.Morat wrote:All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. I haven't bothered looking for any proposal to lower the national speed limit - could someone point me to some evidence that it actually has been proposed by someone whose opinion counts? If it can't be found, I think we can safely say the whole thing is a needless charade. If it can, why not actually try and do something about it, rather than make such a weak statement of your position as would be signing an online petition.

I think you're stretching it a bit here, its more likely that people who otherwise wouldn't give a stuff will take the 30s to register a vote on the petition site. It may be a pathetic excuse for democracy but it did make the gov think again on the Pay as you Go road scheme.

this makes it sound like its a foregone conclusion with the roads minister apparently defending the plan. so it must be true. and its not even from a tabloid.

I rarely, if ever, agree with anything the BNP say...
But this maybe one of those times I do agree...
It is very "big brother"...
IF (and it is a big if) there is real evidence that reducing blanket speed limits reduces casualties or even reduces emissions, then I may be willing to agree to this...
However, I feel that the inability and unwillingness of (for example) my local council/police (Reading/Thames Valley) to enforce the 20mph speed limit along our narrow, residential streets has a much larger impact than a blanket reduction of only 10mph on national roads in terms of road safety.
They cite cost as the reason for not being able or willing to put up GATSO cameras on these streets...regularly used by the spanner monkeys and the end of my road to road-test their work at upto 70mph...
If the cost in policing the already agreed and reasonable limits are too high, what justification is there (other than revenue raising) for spending billions on a national spy network?

Right, I'm emailing a lot of people with the times link and the petition link. I suggest everyone do the same!
Lets see if we can beat the 1.8m signatures that the road pricing petition collected.

A limit policed by average speed cameras may work on a short section of motorway where stopping isn't allowed.
But how does it someone driving at 120mph for 5 miles, then stopping for 20moins before driving past the next SPECS camera?

Storm in a teacup. This is just a continuing policy of reducing speed limits on rural roads, something that has been going on regularly for the last 10 or so years anyway. All that would happen if this is blocked is that the same roads would have their limits reduced to 50, but we'd all have to fork out for the necessary signage, rather than keeping the present signage and changing what it means. It's not something to get worked up about - and if it does piss you off, blame the wreckless teenagers putting their cars through hedges that have contributed to the statistical evidence that makes the policy of reducing speed limits on said roads a political necessity.fuzzy wrote:this makes it sound like its a foregone conclusion with the roads minister apparently defending the plan. so it must be true. and its not even from a tabloid.

Forget the actual figures now,but far more people die from 'superbugs' caught in hospitals than are killed on the roads. Therefore, would it not be better to spend taxpayers money to ensure that our hospitals actually cure people?
