just called up the local bmw dealers to get a caliper refurb kit and he said there was 2 makes of hte calipers, ate or some other make i cant remember the name of.

where will i find out what make they are? is it stamped onto the caliper somewhere? or is it a case of posting a picture so someone can identify them?

This is an old ATE front brake caliper that I have. If you notice the numbers 48/22 and on the left is the marking BMW and on the opposite side it says ATE which is just barely visible.

I can see on your picture a marking but just can't make it out.

Also, Girling and ATE rear calipers are identical. The front are totally different in that the mounting of the carriers will not work.

I'm pretty sure they are ate calipers mate.
The girlings use normal bolts to attach the caliper to the carrier where ate use the 7mm allenkey
Bollocks to this 24v scrap!

my calipers are held on to the strut by 2 17mm(i think) bolts.

Your calipiers are ate.
As bob_s said to remove the ate caliper from the carrier you need to undo two allen bolts and to remove the girling caliper from the carrier you need to undo two 13mm(iirc) bolts
Both ate and girling are held onto the strut by 17mm bolts.
