Crazy Insurance Quotes

It was quinns direct for me. However it was £200 cheaper for TPFT. This included the following mods....
Escort rst Alloys
Lowered suspension
and a Peco backbox.
It was all very chavvy at the time. Unfortunately the next month when I was about to phone up Quinn to insure it I realised I couldn't actually insure it as I was going back to college. So the fiesta's still parked on the drive. And I have a set of RST alloys in the garage awaiting refurbishment.

Most I have ever paid for insurance was £688 on my Mk2 Cavalier SRi when I had just turned 20. I think I have paid well under £500 on every car I've had since then including my E36 328i Coupe.
Insurance is a rip off - the best advice is don't drive like a tit so you don't crash - it then becomes comparatively cheap quite quickly as you build up you NCB.

The most my insurance has ever been is £400 for my current VW Polo MK4 1.4
When I get my E30 318iS it'll be £1200 on Third Party, Fire and Theft. I'm 19 at the moment which makes this quote pretty good.
When I first passed at 17, I couldn't even get insured on the Polo but then companies were giving me £8k +
After negotiating and shouting at the guy on the phone at Churchill it went down to £1,000 from £1,800 then talking to his manager/supervisor we got it down to £700 after saying we would move all of our 4 cars to another company, then after I turned 18 a few months later it went down to £400 although I'm only a named driver.
By adding women onto your policy, it makes a world of difference. I don't think I would have been even driving from 17 without my sister.

when my brother renewed his insurance on his mk3 golf it was quoted at something like £450 from 350 the year before because he got 3 points. he went to renew it online instead with all the points declared and came out the same price as original (350). how weird is that!

I say it all the time on here, but it's worth saying again, - NEVER EVER EVER renew your insurance without at the very least checking what the same company would quote you as a new customer - they do not reward your loyalty, but penalise your laziness.Benho wrote:when my brother renewed his insurance on his mk3 golf it was quoted at something like £450 from 350 the year before because he got 3 points. he went to renew it online instead with all the points declared and came out the same price as original (350). how weird is that!
I wouldn't assume my insurance would necessarily go up having collected 3 points - depending on your circumstances and what the insurer is targeting on any given day, the very fact of being a year older and having a further year of no-claims could well more than cancel out the perceived 'increased risk'. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to how insurance quotes are conducted, they either want your business or they don't, dependent on the sum total of their risk portfolio - something that as a layman, apart from being a meaningless amalgamation of dubious statistics, is impossible to gauge or predict. The insurer is merely playing a game of chance - just as bookees rarely lose, so it is for insurers.

All of the insurance quotes I have done recently have tended to be cheaper when I have a bigger car. I'm a 19 year old male with no NCB and a car parked on the road. Various rep-cars like Mondeo's and Vectras tend to be cheaper to insure for me than hatchbacks. So I think their logic is if its a bigger car and not one of the typical hatchbacks then the driver may be less risky.
I had quotes of over 4k on my cossie with all mods declared a good few years ago but then my licence also had a few extra entries on it lol.
ended up paying £2100 for a year's insurance then at end of that year discovered classic car insurance and its been cheap as chips since.
Lowest quote I have had is on my Astra Diseasel at just over £200 for the year.

It is based on risk. Insurance companies base it on statistics, there is no other way for them really. I suspect they(collectively) have seen some pretty big payouts on mass produced hatchbacks and boyracer cars. Just think, when was the last time you saw a saxo VTS being driven sedately! Unfortunatly the same sort of thing applies to some e30 models.
You find yourself a rare car that is not a hatchback, so something like this 540i touring. There arn't many statistics going for a manual 540 estate I suspect because there arn't many of them. You hope that they haven't all been written off by their owners(by someone else is OK). The car isn't classified as a 'sports' hatchback or the like because, well simply, it isn't. That is 2 criteria that you have successfully beaton.
I happen to have an impeccable driving licence(touch wood, not for long I suspect!) and live in the 'best' postcode region with 4 years NCB. That is 'criteria' 3 and 4 met easily.
Last thing, believe it or not insurers do want your business. With something they have little statistics on, they have to offer something realistic or you will go elsewhere.
Theoretically I could be a total lunitic. I could have had a policy running for 4 years on a fiesta whilst I was at uni and not really ever driving, then at 22 get a 540i and park it into the nearest busy bus stop.

Another personal example. I used to have a audi 100 s4 insured for £550 at 19/20. Much quicker than a standard 325i and with the naff brakes they have potentially a lot more dangerous!

I tried to get a quote on an E36 M3 and a Merc C36 AMG. No one would even quote me... I'm 24 (Quinn said I had to be 30 before they would quote me on the Merc!)
I ended up buying a very tidy E46 318i M Sport got it insured fully comp for €1250
I also have an E30 318is and a Transit Connect

I got a quote for a 225bhp Saab 9000 the other day (doing some window shopping
) and it's only about £100 more expensive than my iS Touring.

Not in E30s any more

Virgin have been quite good, they insured me on a stage 2 Audi A4 1.8T Sport SE B6 saloon for £630 fully comp with my fianceé (who had only just passed her test) as a named driver! The next best quote I got offered at the time was over £1300 for just me and no one else would insure the missus

Hmmmm Dearest quote on a car i owned would have to of been on my 1.1 l reg fiesta lx when i was 17, £5,900
only paid £800 for the car. Cheapest was probably on my 2000 reg fiesta zetec-s, was paying around £400 at 19 which i thought was good. Intrestingly when m,essing around on tinternet as you do i can get insured on a E93 M3 for £2400 odd wheres as the cheapest quote i got on an E46 m3 was 5k

Most recent quotes for the 120d (group 14)
Best £406.35 with Privilege
Worst £1662 with Norwich Union.
Both fully comp. for a 31 year old with 9 years NCD.
Norwich Union had the nerve to phone back and ask of the service was good and the quote was reasonable.

They often ring up when they know that their quote was rubbish, to see if they can effectively broker a better deal to an associated insurer - it can be worth listening to their spiel sometimes.smithy318i wrote:Most recent quotes for the 120d (group 14)

I have been quoted £1700 for my e30m30 with all mods declared at 30 years old which I think is very unreasonable as when I was 22 I payed £1800 for my 730 with 10 points and 1 claim. I think they just pull random numbers out of the air! The lowest is £507 for my 320d with 8yrs ncb.
I was quoted over 8K (direct line) for my m3 last year but got it for £1200 (Highway).
