If you want it save it offer him £2K then. Or just let it go. Or speak to the scrapyard and see if they are interested in selling it on afterwards for a grand.

This is going to happen more and more.
I would hazzard a guess that if the government is financing a grand, then the dealer, more than likely will have to fill in a form with the car's vin number and the government will then "own" the vehicle. They will have no interest in selling it.
Mind you perhaps your local m.p will buy it for you on expenses.

The vehicles have to be 'put beyond use' in order for the government to stump up its £1000.Rich_W wrote:If you want it save it offer him £2K then. Or just let it go. Or speak to the scrapyard and see if they are interested in selling it on afterwards for a grand.
It's a joke and the sooner the scheme is got rid of the better - it is a scandalous piece of consumerism that is exceedingly unlikely to assist the beleaguered automotive worker in any real way - it will only feather the nests of shareholders at the taxpayers expense while simultaneously wasting perfectly usable vehicles and artificially affecting the used car market. Quite apart from the 'carbon footprint' implications, which heretics like myself see as irrelevant, but influential pressure groups see as first priority.
Rant over...

my dad looked into this scheme last week & only changed his mind when he was told that all they would let him have the discount on was a poverty spec estate car when he was after a decent people carrier for him, my step mother & his 4 step kid's.
this "scheme" is a joke & if you ask me it all seem's like a way for the car maker's to shift the base model car's that noone want's.
why should "future" classic's be sent to the scrappy just so that mr brown can feel good about himself & keep the tree hugging soap dodging loony's happy??
it's a joke end of!!!!!

I actually do worry about the environment (a bit!) but I can't see the point in scrapping old cars and making new ones. Surely the best thing to do is keep what we have and make it last longer. Its not like the old cars in question are the ones doing 30k a year on the motorways, they're all brand new fleet cars anyway.
And on a more emotional level, teaching people that new is better all the time is what got us into this mess in the first place. Rampant consumerism has pushed the general public into the idea that you should change your car every 3 years when they're hardly run in! There's a girl at work who has an 8 year old corsa which runs perfectly well as is fine for her needs since she does very few miles a year and isn't interested in cars at all. She asked what she should buy to replace it and I asked her why she was changing. The only reason she could come up with was that it was 8 years old and she wanted a "better reg" meaning a newer one. She's not thick either, just brainwashed.

I'm concerned about the environment, I'm simply not convinced that all this CO2 stuff has got anything to do with anything - there are too many people endorsing the science who have an axe to grind, and there seems to be very little independant thinkig on the matter. Someone needs to convince me that 'global warming' is happening, and that if it is that it will be somehow catastrophic. It seems the people who believe in it think that if they keep saying the same things more loudly, then we'll all agree with them.

It's all bad science....
The production and disposal of a vehicle consumes far more energy and emits far more CO2 and other noxious substances than the use of even the most polluting vehicle over a 20yr lifespan.
The automotive manufacturers have been living on a different planet for the past 50yrs or so...Welcome back to planet earth!!
They need to realise that there is a finite market for their products...Simply producing more cars and vans and THEN trying to market them to cash-strapped motorists is a guaranteed way to loose money.
Perhaps cars are too cheap, in general...
Back in the '60s even a fairly prosaic car cost around the same as an average mans yearly income...
Now an equivalent car is around half the price, yet the technology is light years more advanced...

Hows this. A mates dad bought brand new in 2000, a 523iSE with lots of bells. Paid a touch over 35k for it.
He's covered JUST 38000 miles (yes 38k) and it has fBMWsh and he's just gone to trade it at BMW for a 530i e60. They offered him just 3 grand. Thats VERY close to the magic 2 grand number everyone talks of.
My mates bought it off him. 3 grand for a 1 owner privately owned 38k 2000 523 with fBMWsh, leather, sport pack, sunroof etc.etc. Lot of car for the money???
I reckon "getting in first" on these 2 grand deals could be an earner
. Most people are clueless to buying cars. There WILL be dealers out there cashing in on this 2 grand deal and offering it as a "carrot" to the clueless punter. What do they care if the car gets crushed when the Gov are paying them half? They will the sussing the punters out and offering them this deal on cars that are worth more than 2 grand (but using the "ozone layer" as an excuse rather than the "it's all it's worth line"). They've been doing that for years lets face it.
Only difference is that the car will go to the crusher rather than them making a profit off the resale of it. But then they are getting it for nothing anyway (they pay a grand, Gov gives them a grand!). HOWEVER, they are another "1" towards their new car sales Target!!!!

and the thousand that the dealer puts into the price will be counted back from the full retail price, which no-one pays unless they are crazy.

Although I completely disagree with the scheme and think it's a shame that cars like the ones mentioned are going to meet their maker without a care given for the actual state of the car, history etc.; a point that hasn't arisen is the fact that most cars will probably be £200 worth of Fiesta, or nearly £50 of rusty Chavalier.
This Government really winds me up - can they do anything right?

But can the people who drive these cars really afford the payments on a new car, even with a 2K discount? Probably not.minicooper172 wrote:a point that hasn't arisen is the fact that most cars will probably be £200 worth of Fiesta, or nearly £50 of rusty Chavalier.

They will actually be worse off. Drive 80% of new cars out the showroom and you probably 2k down by the time you've left the car park. Come to think of it, just registering it does it! then they've got to keep the repayments up.darkchild wrote:But can the people who drive these cars really afford the payments on a new car, even with a 2K discount? I went into my local dealer to get a new 1 series, was looking at the s door 118i M sport, 23k on the road, £400 deposit, 42 x £350 and a balloon payment of 6.3k!
Was going to go ahead with it until we read the small print and my car is not eligible for the scrap deal because ive not owned it for more than 12 months!

Spoke to a mate in the trade earlier , They took in a minty e36 328i coupe , On the 2k scheme the garage pay 1k and the government 1k and the car HAS TO BE SCRAPPED
So no deal with the scrappie as they will take bits off and crush the car , Shocking really .

Your total payments incuding the balloon payment work out at £21,400. How much would it be worth after 3.5 years... 10k?Demlotcrew wrote:I went into my local dealer to get a new 1 series, was looking at the s door 118i M sport, 23k on the road, £400 deposit, 42 x £350 and a balloon payment of 6.3k!

Total cost to you: £11,400.
I'd rather buy an E30 M3 with a full service and detailing and keep the change for a decent holiday!

Not just the fact that old classics will go down the pan, the insurance industry will feel a knock on effect too because learner drivers won't be able to use their "sisters" pass me down 198x mini cooper anymore and be learning to drive in newer cars and guess who is going to bear the brunt of that ... SSDD!

Have a look at the prices of these cars which are 3 years old on Auto trader/piston heads they are holding their values really well! The only thing which will cause the value to drop so much is that by the time the finance is up BMW will be bringing out a new 1 series!Morat wrote:Your total payments incuding the balloon payment work out at £21,400.
