Hey guys, am new here all the way from New Zealand, was wondering if anyone here has done this? Had a quick search and couldn't find a lot, the same with the USA forums as they didn't get the m40 :?

Have a few questions if anyone has any advice/knowledge about a e36 m42 into e30 m40 swap.

Any advice/pointers is appreciated,

Cheers, Nathan.

Its possible but you need some bits from a e30 m42 to make it go in - you'll need the e30 engine loom (unless your good with wiring, in which case could probably use the e36 loom and get around the security), e30 exhaust manifold and I think I heard something about a PAS pump but I'm not sure.

We did it on ours couple of years back.

You need an E30 oil sump, go for the E30 manifold as it gives slightly better torque, The loom is very similar IIRC but don't quote me, the mounts need changing too IIRC.

Good luck,

Welcome to the zone :)

Thanks for the welcome and the replies guys,

Does a m40 oil sump work?

And anyone know if a standard m42 e36 exhaust manifold still works clearance wise in a e30 engine bay? (e30 318is parts are as rare as hens teeth over here).

Thanks.

M40 box will bolt up but you will the same nightmare as me fitting a standard prop shaft. You could get one lengthened and then rebalanced. I opted to find a M42 gearbox but I guess it's not quite that easy for you down there?

Sorry I thought you were the chap from NZ.

I'll be interested to see how you get on with the 316 running gear and M42 engine.
