after getting some red lights, my mte wants some so we were thinking of using my oem lights as an experiment. however i have a few questions...

how are they done? we want to keep the revers light clear, so do we just mask that off and spray the whole lense, or just mask it up and spray the indicator?

do we need primer of any sort? so we need to laquer over the top of the whole lense?

nice one thanks.

i found an article on e30 zone wiki too, but it dont mention clear coat at all.

i'm just worried about the match between the sprayed areas and the original areas.

do you think it would be best to spray the whole lense with clear?

Don't stress about the colour match. The colour will be bang on, guaranteed.

Remove the rear lens and wash the indicator section well with soapy water. You'll be wanting to make sure that they are spotless. Dry off, then mask the area surrounding the indicator section with masking tape / newspaper. Try to be as accurate as possible with the tape as it will look great if it's spot on. Spray the unmasked section with the red tint stuff, a few thin coats are much better than thick ones.

I wait around 15 mins between coats, depending on ambient temperature of course.

I've had mine done for well over a year now DIY, and they still look good. I think washing the lenses gently and not power washing them helps a fair bit.

Good luck !!

I gave mine loads of coats so that the colour was bang on with the rest of the lens, but the indicators did flash red for a while.

Now that it has a little bit of fading, the indicators flash orange again but the lights still look fine.
