my s14 is nearly ready to be sold just gotta get some new shocks :).

looking to buy an e30 and put a big engine in it but i need to work out what engine i can afford to put in, narrowed it down to 2-ish

for aguments sake lets say its going in a 320i i need to know exactly every part i will need to carry out the conversion

1) M30B35 (PROBABLY THE MORE REALISTIC OPTION)

engine and ecu (will ecu plug straight in ?)
custom exhaust
custom engine mounts ?
will i need loom to or is that also plug and play ?
will 320i gearbox fit the m30 engine ?

what else do i need ?

2) M60B40 or M62B44 (this is what i really want to do)

complete engine
ecu
gearbox with clutch etc
loom
custom exhaust
custom engine mounts ?
custom prop ?

again what other parts will i need ?

also does it matter if either engine comes from an auto car ? as long as i have a maunal gear box to mate it up to ? or is there more work involved in that ?

im really serious about doing this so i need real and accurate info and as much as possible please ;)

cheers folks (

Check the stickied thread in this forum, it's all there.

To answer:

You need the M30B35 ECU and loom to wire into the engine, and swap two wires.

Make an exhaust, it's probably easiest.

Contact Beefy about engine mounts, a hundred and something posted.

Gearbox won't fit, get it out of an M30 car.

You need either an E30 M3 propshaft or you need to cut the one you have, or fit half and half with the M30 and M20 ones.

This is is just what I know from what I've read. I'm about to do this conversion myself!

Read the forced induction/engine swaps forum. Top of the list.

It's here:

M30 sounds more realistic,
the M60 is apparently a ballache because of the manifolds, also the servo needs moving and thats all i know

M30 you will need

engine from an E34 or E32 ,E28 has the sump in the wrong place and an elbow at the back of the head,it can be used but its much easier just to get the engine out of an e34/32.

Mounts from beefy on here @ £100 plus post

gearbox; manual box is needed from an m30,also some say the m10 box fits,
engine will run fine on auto wiring loom with a manual gearbox

Prop; you have some choices, E30 M3,E36 328i manual(centre bearing reversed),custom prop (E34 front E30 rear halves) or swap the flange on the m30 box for the M20 325i and use an E30 325i prop

E28 535i rad or some use the one off the E34

Electric fan

Wiring; virtually plug and play (use M30 loom)

And thats it

Good luck!

EDIT: note to self, must type faster

M30 is the best and easiest route to take and should take no more than 3 days to complete, having sourced all parts before hand.

As Lee said, it is plug and drive with "3" wires to be changed.

What thay have forgot to mention is that you'll need an electric fan mounted before the rad as a "push" as the viscous will not fit.

You can use the e34 rad as it will fit and save you £150 on an E28 rad up front.

Exhaust does not need much modification if you have a "Twin pipe" set up on the car.
Prop is as above too.

Ecu goes in but has to be turned 180 degrees as the loom is just short.

Diff is another to change. You will need a 8 bolt medium case diff.

The boys at BBB have a few in stock atm, and diff ratios too, but that depends on the way your going to use the car, city driving or motorway cruising.

3.46 or 3.64 is a good ideal ratio to have, but you ca go higher if need be.

Atm 3.46 is giving me 90 mph at 3000 rpm on the motorway and 60pmh in just over 6 secs.

Plenty of torque too, overtaking on the motorway is a doddle, no gear change, just put your foot on the accellerator and you've gone past in no time.

Top end is a theorectic 162mph, but I have had it at 150mph( on a private road of course) so far with plenty of revs in reserve too. winkeye

I wouldn't say m30 is the best...but certainly the easiest out of the two.

Exactly what I was going to say but I couldn't think of a way to put it without sounding like an arse. I think it's a disability. :)

M30 and M50 are straightforward "drop-in" conversions which can be done in a weekend if you've the correct parts. Those swap need hardly any modifications to the body and are cheap.

M60 is completely different world. _Everything_ in the engine bay - driveline - electronics - line have to be relocated / modified and custom made. The M6x swap won't be easy, cheap or fast but damn the V8 sounds good in E30 :)

Having done the M30 swap in 2005, two M50 swaps last year to my friends and now the M60 swap i've some background in this area..
