Thanks y'all :) yeah it's taking a bit of time but hopefully will be worth it in the end. It's the daftest little things that make a difference for me, for example seeing the back end of the car not jacked up on Baja ride height and there actually being some tail pipes present.

yeah i was there but left early sunday morning (our lass wanted to go, bad nights sleep :roll: )
Some smart cars there.

Did a few more bits today, but didn't take any pics.

Replaced the fuel pipes front to rear with some new BMW ones. Also replaced the front to rear brake pipe. Then encountered some chew when it came to fitting the gear lever mechanism, which I'm curently working on.

My hands are fecked once more as I have really dry skin and they crack all the time, so some stale petrol and brake fluid stung for a bit :)

That's what's driving me on mate, hopefully my brother will be here next weekend with a welder so we can get the exhaust finished and get any other jobs finished. Then I've got to beg a car trailer and something to tow it with to get it taken for the VIC check, then MOT, get V5 issued and insure and tax, it's do-able but bloody tight.

If not then the soararse will have to do :-x

straight bar from halfrauds £30 i've towed many of my E30's with it! handy thing to have and much better than the illegal tow rope!

You could knock up your own straight bar i expect for alot less

I don't know what the legality is of towing a car which has no MOT etc,will have to look.

Other problem is nobody to drive the soarer as the missus won't tow me and she's never been towed and I would spy trouble on that front

You're in York right? I know it's a bloody long way really so prob a no goer but I could have offered a choice of 2 car trailers or an A-frame! Not mine but belong to mates and a loan would be no probs at all. :D

I have towed loads of cars without tax and test on my straight bar. Machine Mart is cheaper.
As I see it, the car being towed is not being powered by itself thus it is just a trailer? Albeit a bloody heavy one

I went through this with a friend a mate who told me that straight bar is just the same as a toe rope as far as the law is concerned; car requires tax and ticket. Using an A-frame is slightly different but technically you're only allowed to do this to recover a vehicle. He contends that the only way to legally move a car without tax and ticket is a trailer. That said I know of a fair few people that tow rally cars around the place with A-frames.

Why cant you just drive the car for the VIC check? Same way you drive it to the MOT station with no test or tax, if you have insurance I cant see there being any problem

A straight bar is only £18 and just put the on toe sign over the plate. No one is going to be interested if you know what your doing on toe. Plus a straight bar is dead easy and takes out all the hassle of being toed. Nice work mate looking forward to seeing the final result. I am just about to strip the e36 for my more door so will start a thread once i have something to show

trying to think back to when i had the sport vic tested and have a feeling that you need to mot it before the vic

i may be wrong tho but if you do then you are allowed to go for the vic without tax as v5 wont be issued until you pass the vic

A car that is to be driven to the VIC must have an MOT but can be excused tax.

I can't get an MOT on it until the VIC check as it won't show up on the computer without problems. I don't have a V5 for the vehicle.

I will phone the VOSA centre in either Doncaster or Beverly (which will be where I take it) and check what the deal is with towing it in.

you have the VIC check to get the log book but the car has to be MOT'd befor it goes their
and if you do tow it their be sure the car or what ever your towing it with its spot on ie no window tints or looking dodgy as they wont let you take the car away and will charge you for impounding it also you will have to remove the tints or what ever they found wrong with it sorted befor its leaves their compound!!

If Bob's done it it must be legal :roll:

Can you not find an MOT place very close to the VIC test place - insure the car, drive it there and do the whole lot in one go?

So you're saying that if I tow it there with my soarer which has light tints, the soarer willbe impounded?

I can't MOT the beemer before the VIC test, but I will phone my local test station and ask them what happens when they put the reg number or vin number on their computer.

they have test machines their to check the light going through the window and if its to dark then you ether have to remove them their and then or not allowed to drive out of their in it

but get this you have to remove them their and then as they think their to dark which will then leave glue on the windows

I had been told this before and was sceptical so I walked into the local police station and asked they got a traffic officer out who said yep its fine to do that.

Be carefull,you dont want to lose the car after all the work you have put in.

I dont think your safe using a straight bar as the car has to be steered which means it needs to be road legal,ie tax,test tec.
A frame on the other hand is classed as a trailer (providing your legal to tow it)

My Dad put a written off car back on the road last year that had belonged to a neighbour. My recollection is that the first thing we did was MoT it (before we had even repaired it - the damage to the car was not sufficient to fail an MoT), in order that we could drive it to the VIC. After the VIC we applied for a registration doc, V5C, using form V62. Only when we had VIC, MoT and V5C documents were we able to apply for VED (road tax). The point is, as I recall, the vehicle is in a bit of a legal limbo when it requires a VIC - essentially, it has no registered keeper as far as I understand it. I am referring to the VOSA Information leaflet INF133 as I write this - we appear to have printed it off from a pdf, so get searching on the yougov site and see if you can find the same thing and make your own interpretations from there - a man of your legal understanding will no doubt glean a better interpretation of it than we did. 'you can drive to the VIC site as long as the car is:

1. Covered by a valid MOT certificate (if applicable)
2. In a roadworthy condition

These are clearly contradictory statements. I would take the view that if the second statement above were likely to be enforced, then they would advise that you never drive a vehicle to a VIC, as any vehicle that requires a VIC by definition cannot satisfy those criteria - it cannot be registered or taxed until after the VIC. I take the view that what they mean is that the vehicle may be driven to and from a VIC, but may not be used for any other purpose, or kept on the public road, until it is registered and taxed. The 'displaying number plates' bit is a bit of a joke too, for the same reason - I'd even contend that you could stick any old number plate you liked on it and still be conforming to their criteria. I would take a copy of INF133 with me to the VIC, along with details of the VIC appointment and the valid MoT cert, so that they could be shown to anyone who stopped me en route.

Basically it's a whole lot of bureaucratese that has no meaning in the real world. I have to admit, had I been embarking on the project you have done, I would have got the red-tape out of the way before I started taking things to bits - I can see them causing a bit of aggro with the fact that your engine number will not be the one on their system - after all, the VIC only exists to regularise the identity of the vehicle for registration purposes.

EDIT: I've just realised I haven't posted on this thread before, but I've been following it a while - a cracking build that I'm glad you haven't let defeat you!

Just spoken to VOSA and they have advised I can take the car for MOT first and then be able to drive it to the VIC test cente so long as MOT'd & insured, no requirement for TAX (similar to driving to MOT without any rent in the screen, so long as it is pre-booked)

This is going to make life a lot easier.

Right, need to press on and get it ready for an MOT then

I've got my brother hopefully coming up this weekend with the old man's welder so we can get an exhaust system sorted.

things still to do...

1- fit some new front flexi pipes ( I am sure I must have put the calipers on upside down on the wrong sides at the front as the thread for the flexi pipe is at the bottom on the calipers the way I have them fitted and the hose won't reach with the suspension not under compression)
2- fill & bleed brake system and check for leaks
3- fill & bleed cooling system
4- finish off wiring for electric fan
5- tighten up all exhaust manifold nuts
6- refit front ARB and lower the mounts slightly to clear manifold down pipes
7- test all lights etc and align front headlights (euro ones)
8- refit interior
9- shorten gear selector rod
10- general check over
11- refit washer bottle and other general shizzle under the bonnet
12 - couple of burnouts up and down the road
