So you want to tow a trailer with the same car on it as you're towing with...? You got to be having a laugh!

The trailer and contents, as a whole, shouldn't weigh more than the car pulling it. If it gets a bit 'interesting' you could be in trouble... especially down a hill.

You could 'pull' it... but it's a) not legal and b) unsafe to do so.

Be aware that it's dangerous, and take great care.

Sorry to put a downer on it... but I don't want you getting yourself, or your car(s), hurt.

Yes is the short answer, personally I'd rather have a 2.5 to pull it. I hope you have the westfalia towbar that goes behind the bumper too.

Any way the point is it would be illegal as it is over the designated towing weights for the 318 (as determined by BMW), and probably over the limit of what your driving licance says you can tow (which is up to 3/4 of the unladen weight of the tow vehicle and a combination not weighing over 3.5 tonnes if you got your licance recently). I will have to get my hand book to prove it.... oh really can't be bothered. I think the max for a 325 (cos I just got a tow bar and looked up what I can tow) is something like 1850 kilos, and that trailer with another 318 will weigh more than that. As a general rule with an unbraked trailer you shouldn't really tow more than 3/4 of the weight of the tow vehicle. Oh and the 318 was listed as being able to tow less.

Any way I would do it if I was you and I really had to, but my dad would go ape if he knew. Can't you borrow a landie or somthing off some one. Oh and if you do do it, make sure everything works 100% lights, over run brakes, tyres, numberplate, and grease the bearings - so the cops dont have an excuse.

I do this a few times a year. Almost certainly illegal and definitely dangerous.
I find it OK up to 55MPH, but above that it suddenly becomes unstable, and the tail starts to wag the dog.

Just be responsible, and be aware of the risks. Check you equipment is 100% ( ha ha very funny....) And take it easy. It always takes twice as long with a trailer, and takes twice as much concentration. ( 0 times 2 = 0 so none in my case) Have you done any towing before?

You wouldn't have thought, but this is legal! The boat + trailer only weighs about 500kg.

Towing with a bar is different though basically cos someone is steering it and there is no load on the back axle like the tongue of a trailer. Oh and did you know you are only supposed to tow another car with a rope or bar "if it is causing hazard or danger to other traffic" - fcuking nanny state.

If only they let people do what ever they wanted then idiots who do stuff like this in an unsafe way would kill them selves and decreas the population, survival of the fittest I say. Ahem..... hmm //RANT OVER//

Personally, if it has four wheels, I'd tow it on a rigid bar, rather than a trailer.
If it has four wheels and a working engine, then I'd drive it.
May not be legal, but at least it's safe.

I would go for rigid bar I think, unless you can borrow a 4WD of some description. X5 would be a good choice, 6000kg braked trailer limit!

Nope, it bolts through the towing eye on the front of the car and the rear of the tow car.

PS if you use an X5 to tow 6000kg you will need some sort of licance as the current limit is 3500kg for a combination.

Yeah they are really good cos you can tow a car with a fecked engine and the guy steering doesn't have to bread you do it all for him. Also there is no chance of him rolling in to the back of you if you stop too fast. Where is the car mate?

we were towing a brian james trailer with a nissan 200sx on the iother day with a e36 2.0, was fine outside lane overtaking still... just check out the rear suspension out as the e36 ended up bottoming out (its on coilovers) and eventually popped a halfshaft last hour of the trip was one wheel drive. so yeh you can do it. just go steady though and think of all the weight the brakes are going to have to haul to a stop.

If your vehicle is capable of being towed safely then you can arrange for a friend or relative to come and tow you with a normal towrope. There is no law against towing on the motorway as long as it is done safely and within the 60 mph speed limit for cars and trailers.
