Why are these engines so noisy ?

Everyone i hear inluding mine is a bit ticky from the top of the engine.

Does my head in . :x

Checked valve clearances but they are fine.

Is there such a thing as a quiet m20 ?

I've found that it's usually the injectors.

No other way to fix it than to replace them with new items. Which will start ticking too eventually.... :?

i have heared very quiet 2.5s but all the 20s ive heard are noisy as.

the injectors make a clicking as they open and close. and unless u choose to change them for a difrent type, sadly they may always be that way

but , inlet manifold gasket, outlet manfold / heat sheilds , blu tak in the hole on the steering column, mabey newer exhaust , and bonnet soundproofing may all help to make it better

( actually this is just a shopping list for me, when i can afford it coz mine also ticks :( )

ive always found it to be the other way round.
the 2.0 being smoother and less ticky.
quiet 2.5's do exist, but are fewer and farer between. (mine is the quietest me or richy or dale have ever heard)

these engines were designed to tick slightly when running, my 2.5 is very quiet compared to most

I'm just used to driving my e36 318 which you can barely hear.

Will just have to live with it i guess :(

not going to waste money changing cams ,rockers ,injectors etc just to find it still ticks

The Sport I just sold was bloody quiet, then again, apart from the exhaust manifold, the tourings new engine is quiet.

Simon13's is quiet as he said.

Adjust the tappets for a start, but the injectors will always make a bit of noise! :)

I can hear mine and eventually realised i hadn't properly put the seal in around the heater matrix pipes when i changed it.

The only way to correct it is to pull the dash and the heater out again

mine went noisy after my dad came back from a trip down south , found to be blocked spray bar , the one that feeds oil onto the cam , and you guessed it damaged cam . Suggest to all that you check your spray bar from time to time . Found small piece of gasket material in spray bar about two thirds of the way down. Must have been from when head was off and skimmed some time before. Anyone else had similar problems.

Just put an M50 2.5 in your E30.......would solve the tickiness problem, is better on the juice than the M20 and performance I believe is a little better!
