one I prepared earlier. Modified bonnet hinge to a quick release design. Make life much more easy. Bonnet can be taken on and off without messing with the bonnet alignment

note silver pin

haha, from the looks of things you just cant leave things stock! nice mod nonetheless.

Kinda puts it ito perspective doesn't it even if the S14 is a brilliant engine...
That S50 could even run a little better going by the AFR graph too.

Love the bit of fabrication work! Doubt it is really needed but very usefull if your going to be playing around with the engine in the bay to get it in the right place and you would want it fitting nicely with the shell it's in too winkeye

One thing I reckon I'll be copying is the braced axle stands as even on level ground they can fall if your shaking the car around abit and the bonnet release is a handy idea too :)

For events where bonnets must have a quick release you could even have too small pins at each side with a cable for the R-clip and little slot in a second bonnet and pin sticking out so all it would take is a pull of the cable and sliding the pin sideways abit like a slide bolt....... or am I just thinking too much into it and making it complicated

Benho, I am not tinkering for the sake of it. I only modify things if they don't work if I would like them to. The bonnet is always in the way, even when you do a little bit of service.
And to be honest, I saw the bonnet pins on an old DTM M3 and liked it.

Even 2000-3500rpm there is a big whole in the torque which shouldn't be there but its not fuelling.

Love your work UweM3, an S50B32 into an E30 is my dream....

im not criticising at all. i think its quite cool how you can knock things up like that which are there for actual use and not just for the sake of it. its also good to see someone who can do the work without sending the car to a garage and getting someone else to do it.

Didn't take it as criticism at all mate, sorry if my replay came across like this.
Yes I am quite lucky that I can actully make of lot of things myself. (sometimes it's a curse because I get trapped making EVERYTHING :D)
And I am lucky that I have a friend with an engineering workshop who lets me rade the scrap skip winkeye
I do have a small mill at home and was looking to buy a small lathe as well. But it is a LOT of dirt to get rid off after even a small machining job. So whenever I can I go in my friends larger workshop winkeye

I already make a small number of products I sometimes sell. But I have a very long development time. I.E. the adjustable top mounts I make had to endure 1 year of Nuerburgring and other trackdays before I offered them for sale. I don't like selling things which are not tested and I can assure they are up to the job. Not a very profitable strategie, but I have had not one returned part since.

What type of stuff would you buy off me (not really, just suggestions please)?

when i eventually get round to sorting out an E30 for myself would definately be the quick release bonnet. so simple and practical i dont think that can go wrong. also the Lifting gantry would go down a treat for most of the lads on this board.

Would you pay £350 for the gantry? (unpainted)

me personally wouldnt because i wouldnt ever need such a piece of equipment but considering the cheapest ive seen is:

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ ... code=C/MEH

@ £385 (it doesnt come with a winch and cant be dismantled) im sure there would be a market for a fair few to be knocked up.

If I would have seen this before I probably wouldn't have made mine!!! The winch is only £20. OK it can't be dismantled but there is a whole lot of other things to consider when fabricating stuff people use and can get hurt with them. It's not that easy as it may look. Imagine if somebody uses a lifting device you have made and he brakes a leg. Even if it was his own fault you can be in all sorts of trouble. (Instructions, load tested, failure test bla bla bla).
And all this has to be factored in the price which makes me as a small manufacturer uncompetitive.

small update.
started to weld some brackets in for the E36 radiator but had to stop because of the bl**dy wind! Blew all the gas away and welding was impossible. I am sure the wind dies down tomorrow when it RAINS!!!!

Uwe,

Are you sure you need to weld brackets for this ?

I'm using an M3 rad, and it dropped straight in.

ian,
my m3 doesn't have the slots in the chassis rails that accept the m20 radiator mounts. so i had to weld brackets for the radiator as well.

Ahh, good point. I forgot the M3 shell never got the facelift changes.

Awesome build, I want one! (who doesn't!)

I'm guessing the exhaust manifolds don't need to be modified for a lhd unlike fitting it into a normal rhd e30?

yes fine for LHD, just a little bit bulkhead in the way. Some people just hammer it back, I am going to cut and weld the bulk head.

Good to know : ) I'm sure you would anyway, but please post pics of the modded bulkhead when its done.

Is there any particular reason you went with the b30 over the b32?

I have a B32. But I would also have used a B30, the B32 just came along at the right price and milage

update

just a few pictures to show why it has taken me so long to make progress with the swap. After looking into the S50B32 sump I decided that it would be a good ting to keep instead of the unbaffled and low sitting M50 sump.

here a picture looking into the S50B32 sump (TOP) and a S50B30 Sump (with the baffle missing)
Note how nicely the B32 sump is enclosing the oil pickup. Additional the B32 sump has a SECOND pickup in the front of the sump making this design much more effective than the B30/M50 design.
Image

S50B32 sump pick up area

Jhonno was so kind to donate his old S50B30 for this trial and error chopping massaker. Many thanks mate, much appreciated. It has helped me to figure out if it will be possible to use the B32 sump (with a few modifications....) in the E30

To make the B32 sump fit I need to modify the front cross member a little bit winkeye
Please no comments on the current design, this is only a MOCK UP !

Image

BTW the first thing I changed on the subframe was the angle of the engine mounting tabs! Yes I know it will fit with the E28 M5 mounts if you bend them enough but I just can't live with the wrong angle  I want to use my trusty ice hockey puck engine mounts (with a few modifications of course)

first the top weld and the vertical weld was cut of and tapped the mount upwards
Image

aligned with frame (measure before the correct angle of course!) and rewelded later.
Image

Only job left is to cut a small section of the sump out to clear the steering rack
BTW is I would have a RHD drive this would NOT be required and the sump would fit!

E28 M5 mounts fit perfectly, and with the correct angle. You need to put the lower stud in the outer hole, but apart from that, they fit fine.

Ian, I made some "solid" mounts and the angle from the engine arm to the cross member is not the same. The E28 mount only fits because the rubber makes it flexible. It is not a huge amount but if you want to use a more solid mount it will not line up.
Look at the AGK mounts, they have the angle correction a well.

Glenn, as I already wrote this is only a mock up not the actual frame. I just tacked a few bits together to have something to work with. The final crossmember will be approx 20mm lower than stock. Hardly any loss of ground clearance IMHO
