I've just got rid of my 3litre M60 lump because I got put off by the amount of fabrication necessary.

From custom brackets, custom exhausts and to custom engine mounts.

Not a project to be taken on if you've not got deep pockets! :(

If you want roughly the same power for a lot less cash minus the V8 noise then the M30 will do it nicely.

The M30 conversion is definatly easier and cheaper but it doesn't have the grunt or soundtrack of the 8 8)
The biggest obstacles are the exhaust manifolds and the brake servo but the rest is fairly simple.
If your going to go to the trouble i wouldn't bother with the 3 litre but would drop in the 4 litre instead.

There're couple of V8 projects going on in the projects-section.. ;)

As said, biggest problems are brake servo / master cylinder and exhaus manifolds. I did them by myself, nothing impossible but you need time and nerves to do them. :)

Otherwise it's fairly simple, of course everything has to be relocated in the engine compartment. Wiring is quite easy.
You can buy engine mounts and subframe spacers from www.300mm.de , makes your life much easier.

Moved to engine swaps section :thumb:

I'd say if you're aware of what's involved and you've got the necessary skills - go for it. It'll be an easy upgrade to the 4.0 at a later date...

As long as the exhaust manifolds you make are specced for the 4 litre and not the 3. I am not sure if there is a difference in port size, but I suspect there is.

Good thinking. Imagine doing all that work on the 3L manis & finding they were effectively useless!

The manifolds are the same in M60B30 and B40. Virtually same port size is also in S62 so no problems there.
M60, M62 and S62 exhaust manifolds are interchangeable, though fitting E34 manifolds to E39 might be hard. Never tried, though.

Anyways, it doesn't matter which engine you use because all the important parts (mounts, brake setup, exhaust manifolds, wiring to some point, heater / radiator driveshaft, clutch) and easily applied to for example S62 if you get a bit mad :D

Would there be any advantage of fitting s62 manifolds to a non vanos m62 4.4?

Do you have any links on v8 tuning, as for its size it is drastically underpowered!

Yes of course, normal V8 (M60, M62) manifolds are pretty crappy and cause quite a lot powerlosses.

Well, with good manifolds, exhaust and remap you can take almost 350bhp out of M60B40 which is quite a lot for mildly tuned big NA engine (87,5bhp/l). For example S62 makes only 80bhp/l.

I haven't run into writeups about BMW V8 tuning, but the basic principles apply also to it. Fitting S62 stuff into M60/M62 helps of course but isn't cheap.
