Hi guys I have a late style M20 Box which is marked up as a sport box, how can I check this to be sure?

Also I think it rattles very slightly when very hot, how much would it cost to rebuild?

Rebuilding will not solve the rattle. Just ignore it, I know people who have spent an awful lot of money trying to get rid of this rattle only to fail. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the box, it's just an annoying characteristic.

To identify it as a sport box, have a look for the gearbox number found at the bottom of the gearbox on the lip of the bellhousing. Note: This is not the number that starts with 260.

A sport box should end in the letters HM or TNN.

If it's definately a sport box and you wanna sell it then let me know as I'm in desparate need of one.

Hi Adam, will find out for you tommorrow mate. Is there any way I can find out by turning the input shaft so many times and counting the output in a particular gear?

Sport boxes don't have overdrive and are 1:1 in top (5th) gear.

Sport boxes are overdrive, it's only 1st 2nd and 3rd gears that are different. 4th and 5th are the same and 4th gear is 1:1

Hi Adam, just read your post above, sorry have had a manic day, had a look at the codes on the box, couldn't see what you talked of, but did put it in 5th and 15 turns on the input shaft gives 18.5 on the output shaft, but guess this is irrelivant now.

Can I use this method in another gear e.g 1st/2nd/3rd?

I am out there tommorrow so let me know

You should be able to use this method in 1st 2nd and 3rd to tell you if it's a sport box but I'm not sure what the ratio's on a sport box are.

I've definately seen them in another thread on the forums somewhere but I can't for the life of me remember where. I meant to save them but never got round to it.

You probably won't see the number at forst because it will be covered in crap. It will be under the gearbox on the very outer lip of the bellhousing that joins to the engine itself.

Here's a pic, HTH

We need to be more specific about which sport box. I'm probably getting confused  between my E28 and E30 These are the ratios for the E28 boxes which may (or may not) mate to the M20 engine:

BMW 280 Sport Getrag M5
1st..... 3.514
2nd.... 2.080
3rd..... 1.355
4th..... 1.000
5th..... 0.810

265 Getrag
1st..... 3.822
2nd.... 2.200
3rd..... 1.398
4th..... 1.000
5th..... 0.813

260 Getrag
1st..... 3.830
2nd.... 2.200
3rd..... 1.401
4th..... 1.000
5th..... 0.810

262 Sport Getrag CR Dogleg
1st..... 3.717
2nd.... 2.403
3rd..... 1.766
4th..... 1.263
5th..... 1.000

I've got the 262CR dog leg box on my E28 (M30 engine) - no overdrive and a final ratio of 1:1. Sorry if I misled anyone

This is copied directly from my owners handbook!........
325i 'box
1st 3.83
2nd 2.20
3rd 1.40
4th 1.00
5th 0.81

325i Sport 'box
1st 3.35
2nd 2.03
3rd 1.36
4th 1.00
5th 0.81

Therefore, best check would be to select 1st. If the input shaft turns >3 and 3qtr turns for one turn of the tailshaft, it's a standard box. 3 and a 3rd turns and it's a Sport 'box.

HTH
Stuart.
