E30 in the next 5-10 years?

why is it e30s with engine changes will be worth less to an enthusiast but chasis changes such as brakes, suspensions wont bother them

i reckon e30s with items from the same period will have a high price, e.g. a 2.7 m20 or even a m30 but a s50 or any other 24v motor will not be worth much.

i donts see alot of e30s anymore so i assumed they are in the hands of enthusiasts already.
i only see 2 e30s on a regular basis, 1 of which is an black alpina for sale on pistonheads for £7k+ and another calypso red cab both owners known to me.

Perhaps because little chassis changes such as brakes, suspension are easier to reverse, as oppose to swapping the original engine back in.

Possibly - all manner of cars, some ostensibly quite undesirable/low value, e.g., Morris Marinas, Hillman Avengers, etc. get restored at great expense because they may have sentimental value, or their owners may be defiant oddballs who wish to be different - the classic car world is full of such eccentrics!

I live in Somerset, a relatively poor part of the country, people moving in to the area and retiring excluded. I see very few E30's on the road, surprising considering how cheap and reliable they are. However I went to London (Ealing) last weekend and saw more E30's on the road, in one day, then I have in my whole life!
Can anybody who lives in London (Ealing) explain this?

The E30 will always be favoured by driving enthusiasts rather than monied folk, and I only see rare specials M3, Hartge, Alpina going mad in value.

I see the E30 scene heading in a similar direction to the RWD Escorts with some pristine examples on show, very few left on the road and others kept going with lots of welding for race/rallying.

I recon that it will be the rarer models and the concrse that will only ever get any serious money in 5 - 10 years time.

M3's are spine tinglingly sexy but in terms of rareity they are plentyfull in numbers and I would say most are charised and looked after. If you want a future e30 classic go for a Hartger, Alpina or a Baur due to the much lower production number and nice specs.

Also I think the e34 M5 and Alpina's are going to be a really good classic in 10-15 years time. Insainly well build and i think next to the e30 one of the best BMW's ever produced of the late 80's to early 90's. Also they are goign for reasonable money now so snap them up and do 'em up.

no M5 so far has every fetched a decent price even when 25-30 years old and becoming rare, i mean E12 M535i the first affordable road going M badged car is worth no more than £3k, even the tailhappy E28 isn't worth that much money and according to 5 series enthusiasts E34 was a bit of a let down compared to the E28 abit like E36 to E30.

I'm with this totally, I bought mine as a long term commitment as I believe they will find there place within the classic community, and I can't see me ever getting rid of it!
It's still a joy to drive even though It's broke through the 61k barrier. Every time I go to the garage and get it out I've just got to go on a trip somewhere.

10 years i recon they all will fetch good money as they are an 80's icon, and you will start to see a lot of restorations even on poverty spec cars

the big question is, Will the zone be here in 10 years time ?????

As long as I can afford have a running "project" as well as a daily I think I will have an E30 - my garage won't fit anything much bigger and there's not a lot out there thats affordable to tinker with on a small budget

I think the prices will start to rise once the economy starts to recover - might be the case that more E30s than you would expect get scrapped during the economic downturn due to people either not being able to afford repairs, or trying to raise money from frag - but this should mean that the ones that are left hold their values when things start picking up.

I think the 80's are back in now, Ashes to Ashes is on later!

They'll always be a channel of some kind for e30 owners wether or not it's the Zone or the local BMW club.

One of the nice things about the poverty spec e30's is that most of the tugs have gone to the scrappers. The ones that will hang about are testament to the fact that you didn't have to be Lord Moneybags or a fat cat yuppie to indulge in something brilliant.

Had my Dolphin Grey 325i for 2 Years and my 2.8i Capri for 2 Years - my favourite cars. Regret selling both of them.

I can't honestly see me getting rid of my Alpina, once I get the time and money again I will finish off the last bits of body work.

Going back to the orginal thread. I see 320's and 325's becomning rarer as they get more abuse. 316's & 323's are common for concorse so should be around for ages.

I just hope one day I can own a Alpina B6 as it's now my top dream e30.

Getting rid of an E30 just doesn't make financial sense unless it is rotten or crash damaged. However, this situation will change as part prices go up. We can see the start of the trend as E30s are getting harder to spot in the scrap yards. It won't be long before you'll need to retrim the seats you have, fabricate new sunroof panels, scrounge around for cylinder heads that haven't already been welded.
At that point E30 ownership stops being a cheap way into RWD fun and starts to be a financial burden. Lets see what the owner profile looks like then!

I think tourings will always get a good cult following as many of the tuning companies made soem killer machinces.

Nothing wrong with a moredoor but I think again they will fall under the concorse surviers.

We've seen parts prices climb somewhat for certain stuff.

Values won't creep until the car is worth more as a whole rather than in parts. This may never happen though.

Old bmw's tend to suffer from their reputation for robustness. Everyone thinks they won't break ungeneral. This seems to hurt their value in old age it seems
