i want to get a general idea of what sort of milage an 2.5 engine can take?
i have seen a car with 150,000+ miles but he says the engine is still sweet with service history etc
or is it that i should just go and see it and not worry about the high figure milage?

I would go and see it abused M20's can make 200,000, they litterally go on forever if looked after!

bmw steely blocks do last forever as long as you overhaul them every now and again 150000 to 200000 miles full piston rings bearings the lot honestly the term dont fix it unles its broken is pants if you overhaul an engine before it gets too bad then it will last forever................

Top ends get ropey at like 120k on your average car, but quick head rebuild and she's off.
An old guy i dealt with at a garage had a 320 which he'd had from new, it had 230k on the clock and the engine was untouched from new, just changed the oil every 8k. He ran mineral oil in that out of interest.

Mine had 166 thou Miles on it when I got it and apart from ajusting the tappets it is A ok.
If you are buying onew the probs are not the engine but the body and electrics etc.. my power steering is giving up. But if you know what to listen for and fix it you can make them go for 250,000 MINIMUM before a top end rebuild.
One guy in Washington DC had his go for over a million miles on only 2 rebuilds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Any other engine and that would be a miracle.

Not quite what ya asked but a few years back I had an M40 powered 318i with 235k on the clock, and it seriously was running like new!!
So i'm sure the M20's are capable (if looked after) of reaching 300+

we picked up our E30 M20 engined with 158K on the clock two weeks ago and its now done 164K, oil change this weekend, its used 1 litre of oil, motorway everyday...the engine is just sweet as a nut.
I was looking to change the engine but tbh while its running that nicely i decided to concentrate on the styling while I am using it daily (soon it will not be the everyday car and in for some major re-furbishment for the show season) so swapping out the engine this early on doesn't seem to make much sense!

You hear some people raving about em, & some people blaming them for bore wash / blown up lumps!! I know it doesn't sound worth the risk to me...Richy325iTouring wrote:mines going strong and that just shy of 200k.

my sport had 190k on it when i removed the engine. This sport has been ragged from new till the day i took possession of it and it sounds dog rough, BUT THE ORIGINAL HONING MARKS ARE STILL VISIBLE ON THE BLOCK!!!!!! My SE has 146k on it and it still pulls well! 150-200k is nothing if taken care of
