having a private plate is no different to having some 17" alloys or a bodykit, your enhancing the look of the car right? at the end of the day its all down to preferance, ive got an irish one which was a gift from my folks (ELZ****) it works quite well to the people who know my name, to others its just an irish plate. personally i reckon there 8)

I've got a personal plate, and I've got a personality disorder
I think that our Government have it all wrong with vehicle registration. When you buy a brand new car, the plate that is issued is supposed to reflect the age of the car. It doesn't!!
I know of a Mondeo that was built in 2000, but wasn't registered until April 2002. The car is on a (XX)02 plate and the owner insists that his car is a 2002 model (but it couldn't be because it's a mk2!). IMHO, this makes a mockery of DVLA's ruling that you can't put a P plate on a 1994 car (for example). ....And the plate on my Touring (and it was on my '89 RS before) wasn't issued until 1997, so you work that one out!
If we have to put-up with legislation that vehicle registration must "date" all new vehicles, then the vehicles should be dated as per their model year.

A far better better system would be for individuals to be issued with "identifier tags" for each vehicle they own. Some countries use this system, so it can't be that difficult to run. After all, all vehicles have their own unique V.I.N (which DVLA already recognise and manufacturers use for the supply of parts etc) which provides much information about the vehicle, including the build date.

It's not the people who like to have "personal" plates who are at fault here it's the system which not only allows it, but encourages it, thereby generating more revenue from motorists.

Stuart.

But it makes sense that a car is registered when it's first used doesn't it?

Gives a better indication of the "age" of the car, i.e. how long it's been in use for......
