Hello,
I found these on the bay, which consist of the very good brand Infinity, and they have gone down the root of components with the midwoofer being a 6x9 rather than the usual 6.5"

Ingenious or sacrilege??

6x9's seem to much maligned on this forum, cannot think why as they sound ok to me!

I agree, 6x9's are very effective, give good treble and bass

Yeah I've noticed this as well.
Especially if you like your music fairly loud!
You get the usual "why do you need it that loud?" "Are you showing off, are you council?"
No I just feel inside the music!

personally i think 6x9 are a good compromise, otherwise you would need 6 to 8 inch speaker to reproduce the bass and mid range, but such a wide speaker is difficult to fit in most cars, so a squashed 6x9 works with the space available.
I have also heard a lot of people saying the rear parcel shelf is a bad location for speakers, one said i would need to be sitting in the front seats facing backwards to get the effect, well maybe my elder ears can hear things these people cannot as my current build in progress in my tin top is rear 6x9 and front 5.25 both driven by amps and a simple sub in the boot, i am even slowly writing a wiki on how i got the 6x9's in without cutting any metal, and i think they sound very good, given i will not win any prizes for sound competitions, but i do know a thing or two about sound and tone (as a guitarist of more than 20 years and spent many hours setting up for gigs in awkward shaped rooms) so personally i think 6x9's are the best suited speaker for the average car audio enthusiast.

Might have to be a treat for next month. If I do get 'em I'll tell you what there like. Can't be any worse than the overpriced and hollow sounding crap I bought 3 months ago!

Bobbin1982: Iv got a couple of sets of rear pods if your interested, would mean you only need to run the wires, if bmw havn't done it for you already like they usually do
Wanted: Any old component speakers, complete or separate parts, let me know what you got

tbh im not the richest person in the world being a student and only 19 but ive never settled for anything less than pioneer! bought a pioneer head unit recently on ebay for 40 inc P&P, some 6x9's for parcel shelf brand new for £20 3 way 360w IIRC? and components in the front with tweeters on mirror pods...sounds amazing!!!!!
you do really get quality with pioneer
in my first car (fiesta) i build a sub for the boot - 1 x 1200w 12" and 2 x 1000w 10"'s, both pioneer again for under £100 off ebay.
set it up in a day, and had the neighbours round complaining from 5 houses down!!

What size amp would you recomend to drive these 6x9's??
Gaffa tape is like "the force" - it has a light side, a dark side, and it holds the universe together.
There's nothing that shouts "Poor Workmanship" more than wrinkles in the Gaffer tap

A head unit would probably drive these quite well tbh, but as said earlier a quality amp'll do it nicely.benjy wrote:What size amp would you recomend to drive these 6x9's??
