a while ago on here i was reading a thread about lightening standard flywheels and someone posted a few pics of other cars that have had to much taken off and had broken up causeing them to rip out of the bell houseing and bonnet and through the rad etc - quite interesting i was just wondering if anyone knew where that thread was :)

Was quite common back in the early days of motorsport, when machining wasn't as accurate, balancing wasn't as accurate, and there was no such thing as computers to analise stresses. Many a driver lost feet or legs to flywheels that broke up, sawing their way straight through the bellhousing and trans tunnel.

Fairly rare these days though, but as the above show, can and does happen occasionally.
cheers,

harry

Even a lightened fly will be fairly heavy and if it lets go at very high speed, think of the inertia it's carrying!

Well yes I know it's carrying a hell of a lot of energy, It was asked before weather it could break through the transmission tunnel and injure the driver... I think we have the answer if it can smash through all that then the relativly thin metal of the tunnel would not be much protection 8O

on an e30 the clutch is about level with your feet so its going to hurt if the flywheel gives up at high speed

I would quess that the flying fly' would take the path of least resistance,so would bounce off the tunnel and go onwards and upwards.. winkeye
