E34 is better as they have the correct layout of sump and oil pick-up to fit over the E30 subframe. If you buy one from an E36, you'll still need an E34 sump etc to make it fit. E34s also tend to have had a slightly easier life...

There's never a straightforward answer! Ex E34 drops straight in over the crossmember as stated...but..... you need E36 engine mounting brackets, battery staying in the engine bay? E36 engine loom is longer and will fit the ECU into the 'conventional' E30 home.Battery in the boot? E34 loom will do,but(again!)you will need a weather proof box for the ECU,similar to the arrangment on E34.So it's swings and roundabouts, either play about with the motor or source up a few odds and ends.I took the E34 engine route.Best way is to buy a complete running donor,at least you know then that the thing does run, very uplifting when you are fighting the thing to get it started! And E34's are very heavy,so weigh in well... winkeye
