Lot's of people have given me some good advice lately on here so firstly wanted to say thanks for the help.

I’ve been on the hunt for a good touring for a little while now as a project and thanks to the Zone I hope I found one. After a 22 hour journey from North London to Guernsey and back yesterday, I am now the owner of this touring:

It's not perfect, but seemed an honest car. 70k on the clock, in need of a service (no MOT's in Guernsey) but standard, straight and no rust that I could find. It completed the 180 mile trip without drama.

First thing is to get it inspected and through it's MOT so I can register it in the UK. Depending on whether there's any nasty surprises I'll then start on slowly bringing it up to standard.

BTW - I saw the damaged wall in Guernsey where Ste's old car with the 328 engine met its end. Very slow corner so very unlucky, Guernsey has a 35mph limit anyway!

cheers, simon

It is a 2.5 yes.

Most important thing to me was a solid shell though as tempted by the m50 route..

See how it goes after a service first.

Dropped the car off at A-Tech yesterday and awaited the verdict from Ant. Haven't dealt with him before and was a thoroughly nice bloke to deal with, especially staying late to wait for me to arrive with the car after work.

Came back with a very comprehensive list of things to do and patiently talked through it all.

Thankfully no hidden rust holes which was my main concern as you never can see what may be lurking without taking it apart. Body given 8.5/10 which is good news as a solid base.

Also good news was it's got a 3.91 slip diff, bad news was it had self leveling suspension that's coming off as it's leaking and costly to fix. That 100% never occurred to me that it might even have it fitted. I didn't know e30s could have that as an option. Still, should handle better with new Bilsteins stuck on in place.

Loads of stuff to sort with it catching up on not having had a service for a while, but nothing out of the ordinary - just the unexpected suspension removal!

So hopefully in a weeks time will have an MOT, then I can begin on the interior and exterior clean up.

Need a good black leather sport seat to pilfer right hand side bolsters from if anyone has one going pl?

cheers, simon

well, just obtained a sports seat from which to pilfer the bolsters.

got a new sunroof to fit

got a new dash to fit as the one in there is cracked

been given a new mint steering wheel off a mate who bought a wln car and replaced the wheel with a suede one - very kind of him.

now, as everything inside is coming out may as well replace the carpet as the one in there is worn through by the clutch - anyone got a good one for sale cheap?

bank holiday weekend coming up looks like its going to be spent inside a touring swearing..

cheers, simon

Got the touring back from Ant at A-Tech on Thursday. I would like to do most of the maintenance on it but thought it best if someone who knows what they are doing gives it a sort out to begin with.

He's done a great job I must say and the car drives really nicely, no comparison to how it was before it went in (it hadn't been serviced for 4 years).

It's had full service with new brakes, cambelt change, water pump, fluids, steering rack, pump, pretty much everything at the front suspension wise replaced, plus new rear shocks and top mounts as the self levelling suspension was knackered.

Prob some other stuff I can't remember as well but it now has an MOT and to drive it feels really tight.

Engine wise it pulls really well too. I had a destricted e36 328i sport before so it feels less pokey of course - prob 55 bhp less - but it makes a nice sound and there's not so much car to drag along so it's nippy enough.

I had a try of a few different mild chips while I was at A-Tech and I couldn't quite make my mind up so Ant suggested keeping them both and swapping them round to find the favourite.

I haven't had time to do this just yet as decided to take it out for spin in the wet yesterday to have some fun with it. While deliberately trying to get the back to step out I managed to get it very stepped out. 180 degrees the wrong way in fact on a slip road on to the north circ. Fortunately kept it out the barrier but I think some new tyres would be in order 8O

Anyhow, did some work on it today. When Ant took off the self levelling suspension it was a bit low at the back and there's lots of speed bumps round mine so meant a lot of graunching noises. So had to swap the rear springs round to lift it up a bit.

You know your old when you start raising cars :(

So, pic before (note laptop for Zone advice on how to change rear springs!):

Image

Simply undid the 19mm bolt on the damper, dropped the arm and took out these short ones. Putting these bigger standard touring ones on:

Image

Ant recommened a good pressure wash under the arches and despite doing that still found a bit of mud around the filler cap while the wheel was off (banana skin touring optional extra)

Image

Then swore a lot as it's a PITA getting those bigger springs in if your on your own and don't have a spring compressor thingy.

Ended up disconnecting ARB links and final drive bolt on the diff which helped get the arm a couple of cms lower. Then wound the spring as much into position as I could, sprayed a bit of wd40 on to make it slippery, then lying on the floor gave it a well aimed boot onto the spring seating. Not sure that's recommended best practice but it did the job. Just got to be very careful round the brake lines.

Put it all back together, then had a bit of a moment as stood back to admire my handiwork and saw it looked like a friggin' dune buggy:

Image

My first thought was 'FFS they're coming off then', but they settled down a little and there's better clearance for speed bumps now:

Image

Swapped a very faded front grill round too. Before:

Image

After:

Image

And my front room now has a nice new two seater leather sofa while I swap driver and passenger mechanisms round:

Image

In order to get this bolster fixed up and have the driver seat as the passenger seat:

Image

While I'm on the PC pics of my last two beemers are to hand:

e36 328is, very fast capable car but a bit of a boat to drive

Image

And one I wish I'd never let go, a classic sleeper, 1973 Fjord Blue 2002 tii Lux:

Image

Next touring jobs:

1) get the headlining out, re-trimmed in black suede and back in
2) get the carpet out and replace
3) swap the cracked dash round
4) get it UK registered at some point I spose..

All of those are such little short sentences but will prob take me months to do.

Must say this is a cracking forum, incredibly helpful so cheers all.

Hi Simon..looks like a good buy, glad you found a goodun!

Looks like you've got a fair amount of work left to do..but its all worth it!

Black on black is a good combo..im off to look at a 330i sport touring this week which is the same.

Is there not a decent trimmer round your way who could have done your side bolster? Had mine done top and bottom for £80.

Excellent thread btw....good luck. :D

well done getting those rear springs in without a compressor, I had dramas getting the stock rear springs back on my project touring with the help of spriong compressors, hoping the lowered ones will be piece of pish

Nice base car you have there, keep the pics & updates coming

cheers, and dips, I think the fact it was raining made it look a bit tidier than it really is paint wise. we'll see.

got my seat looking like this now and am wondering where on earth to start with swapping the adjuster mechanisms over. haven't got any circlip pliers for start.

Image

I have no trouble taking things apart, its the putting back together I struggle with

gary at cass bro will be restitching the upper bolster and re-padding out the lower bolster, so might just leave him to it on reflection. switching the adjuster mechs over looks very fiddly unless anyone has a 'foolproof' guide? found some guides on here but couldn't quite fathom it

I kinda knew those SLS rear springs would come off Simon, hence the supplied replacement set  but like the chips, taste is a personal thing

Large quantity of mud there too !

V nice solid car this one, unlike many "minters"

yeah cheers Ant much appreciated. The brake light behaves itself now btw and bled the coolant off and re-topped up.

I am well happy with how solid it is having got underneath myself now and had a good poke around.

Swapped the chip round today, prefer the smoother lower idle of the peakier chip (A), prefer the lower torque of it too, but then it's not so free revving higher up past 4/5k as chip 'C' is. Swings and roundabouts really.

Decided on addressing this saggy old cloth cat of a headlining today:

Image

Seemed to be pretty easy to get it out just by loosening the door trims and pulling out a few trim panels:

Image

Sunroof removal was pretty straight forward apart from when I was undoing the 6 torx screws that hold the sunroof in the pressure snapped the black plastic rail the nuts are housed in. Ho hum, fortunately the spare Ant donated to me will provide the parts to make good.

Headlining less:

Image

Headlining out:

Image

Ray Mears impression:

Image

Headlining in flat ready for stripping:

Image

30 seconds later:

Image

Totally minging layer of tar like foam covering everything:

Image

Started scraping it off with a window scraper:

Image

Decided that's enough for the weekend so going to leave it there and off for a well earned cuzzer.

When people on here outline a removal process and say 'installation is simply the reverse', I think you could add; 'but will be a complete ball ache'.

Came out easily enough in a couple of hours but I can see how it's going to be quite time consuming to get it right round the sunroof going back in.

cheers

If you don't have any circlip pliers it's difficult!

You're a brave man taking on the headlining. I can't face doing mine yet!

Just wondering... if it is possible to get it out without removing the sunroof but instead cutting the fabric that is screwed down around the sunroof aperture.

Are you going to drive around without the headlining in?

Don't throw away your old headlining as it will be useful as a pattern to cut out the new material (although it has stretched to be longer than it should so watch out for that).

yeah you could cut away the fabric to remove the headlining without taking out the sunroof, but taking out the sunroof was really quick and easy. If I was to do it again I might not even break the plastic rail bits this time.

going to drive it without the headlining til it gets recovered and ready to go back in. is that bad or something? not really driving the car though as still not registered yet in the uk. and it keeps sliding off the road..

if I mess up the headlining at least I tried, but as dips says he gave me a killer tip to get a better finish (got one coming btw dips, still need a sunroof panel though)

I'm not that competent but really enjoying tinkering and learning about the car, really wouldn't have attempted much without this forum and some great advice

cheers, simon

i fixed my sagging headlining yesterday and what i done was to get some spray glue and spray loads all between the cloth and roof from a hole in the rear of the car and my mate was pulling it from the back to keep it taught and i got a brush and brushed it up onto the roof and i got a perfect finish without even taking it out :)

as the photos show my headlining was truly gone so needs a complete recover job. it's difficult to get a good finish round the front of the headlining owing to all the curves, check panel etc. I could see with a non stretchy fabric you'd get a lot of creases and it'd look a bit rubbish.

dips recommended getting hold of a 325i sport black front roof panel (the bit with the visors in) to sit over the front of the headlining as they do on 325i sports.

this removes the need for being a master trimmer to get a good finish, the back 75% of the headlining looks comparatively starightforward to cover and makes it a lot easier.

I'll see how easy, or not, when I come to do it!

I just imagine very loud  I took the sunroof trim out of mine as an experiment and it was so much louder on the motorway I couldn't face taking out the whole lot for the fear that it would be deafening.
