Just a wee upate....

I got the remaining bits and bobs off from in the engine bay, fuel filter bracket and bonnet runners, then started to get it degreased for painting, but first I removed the stickers and the last piece of sound deadning with a heat gun. Anyone know if any of the stickers are still made??

Anyway...before..
The stickers...

So it's better than it was, managed to get most of the way oil off, but still got the bit bellow the battery tray and the front section to do.

I think that's mostly it for the shell till it comes back, so I'll prob start to strip and clean the engine in the next week or so. Anyone know of anything good for cleaning up all of the metal parts, I think someone mentioned Alubrite before but I'm not sure???

cheers. :D

Yip I sure am, eh it'll be a while, I don't think I'll make Gaydon by a long shot, but I'll be done when It's done, not gonna rush it.
blitz877 wrote:what de-greaser have you used mate?
Gunk and a couple of washing up brushes if you want, great at disolving the grime grease and waxoyl :D

I'll be down at the Pod at some point when it's finished, or if you go to Gaydon.

A bit of an update, today I went up to the garage and got stuck into the engine, started to strip it down for painting, cleaning and overhauling. first i removed the oil cooler and filter housing and exhaust manifold...

Image
Image
Image

then I removed the front pulleys and belt covers...

Image
Image
Image
Image
not sure if this was a date stamp at first, but i soon noticed it must be a casting number or something as the date is on the side.lol.

Image

Then all of the water and breather pipes came off....

Image

After that it was such a nice day I thought I take some photos :D

Image
Image
Image

and back to the engine...
The inlet manifold was next to be removed...

Image
Image

then it was off with the rocker cover for a wee peak, the car previously was ran on Castrol GTX Magnatec and the protective stuff in it is still all over the engine, thats the orangy colour, can't be a bad thing I suppose, but it doesn't look as clean as other engines.

Image

Next up was the sump :D

Image
Image

the colour is the same down ere too....

Image
Image
Image
Image

everthing looks ok, no nasty surprises apart from the bolts for the sump being rather loose, less than hand tight, worrying, maybe that's why the sump leaked :? Still easy fixed 8)

Image

The Inlet fannymould was next to be stripped, there was a difference in colour in the ports, cylinders 3 and 4 were rather clean looking compared to the others, not sure if thats due to the shape of the manifold or a running issue.

Image
Image

So the injectors came out..in pieces, the rubber seals were very stiff and not doing too must imo, but they're being replaced, and I might do the M50b20 injector conversion too since they're out

Image
Image
Image
Image

And finally the throttle body off....

Image
Image
Image

Ready for cleaning and painting before being rebuilt

Image
Image
Image

not bad for an afternoons pottering about :D

Nice job. Totally envy your weather, were I live we only have snow that instantly turns into water, back in the old days we had snow. Never get to play with my 325iX in the snow anymore :-(
Why is there not enough time to do it right, but allways enough time to fix the errors - I borrowed that, just so reallistic in my line of work.

Right, another little update......

whilst i'm waiting for the shell to get painted, I've decided to be completely insane and spank more cash on doing a 2.8 conversion aswell, so since I've completely lost my mind..I'll strip down the engine a bit more!

So...the lighting in the garage is pretty crap so the pics are very poor but I'll take some better ones when I next go up....here goes....

I forgot to take some pics, but the Head and gasket came off, but since I fixed the head last year I wasn't expecting too much bad here...

Image
Image

A bit coked up though, seems to have been running a bit rich before this...

Image

same here...

Image
Image
Image

So next up was the challenge of getting the front crank bolt off....but this was a bit of a shock as it was very lose and managed Neil and I got it lose with only a little pressure with a 1/2" bar...

Image
Image

So next up was the Pistons to come out, didn't manage to get many pics here, but I took some this afternoon when I got home....

Image
Image

Seems like I caught these in the nick of time...8O

Just...

Seems like these could do with a bit of a clean up though, and 3 and 6 had the worse scoring on the side too... :(

But hopefully these should be fine, gonna take them down to the local machine shop in Rosewell, Engine Services for the 12mm to be shaved off of the skirts winkeye Also I've picked up a set of b20 130mm con rods(Cheers Murran  ) for the conversion too...So just the Crank to find!! winkeye

So I'm getting there, but I'm off my head!!!! winkeye

It'll just keep the same feel of acceleration since more weight is added by fixing in the rust!! winkeye

Right a wee bit of an update....

Since last updated I've changed my mind on the 2.8 front, I'm gonna keep it as the 2.5 for the mo but I'm gonna do the motronic 1.3 upgrade and maybe a couple of other things but staying mainly standard for the mo....

So at the weekend I thought I'd make a start to getting things cleaned up and I also wanted to get the crank out too so I could have a look at the shells.

So first up, out with the crank, and I even managed to get the rear oil seal casing off without having to take the block off of the stand  but I wanted the sandwitch plate off so I had to take it off anyway. lol. :hammer:

Image
Image

As for the shells these were the worst in the block...
Image
Image
Image
Crank looks good too... :D

And these were the worst from the caps...
Image
Image
Image
Image

Getting changed anyway tho, so after about 4hours with some degreaser and a few brushes I got the sump, rear sump cover, timing covers, rocker cover, inlet manifold, engine mounting arms, alternator bracket, and a few other bits all cleaned up, but I forgot to get pics but you'll see them when they go back on.

As for the block, it also got scrubbed and a run over with a wire brush/drill attachment prior to being painted....
Image
Image

then a coat of "Cylinder Black", seemed quite good at the time, but could do with a few more coats.....
Image
Image

So thats where I'm upto at the mo, I've ordered loads of engine parts so I should maybe get building this back up by the weekend :woohoo: Oh and Ive had a play around with my rocker cover so we'll see how that turns out I may do the Inlet manifold the same colour too
