Morning peeps!

I have some alloys that need refurbishing and my question is...

Whats better?

I have been given different advice by different people.

Some say powdercoat is better because it is tougher but some say paint is the way forward as powdercoat if chipped will allow water behind and corrode the wheel and is then a bitch to get repaired.

Any experience guys/gals?

really down to price, powder coating will be better and harder wearing but cost twice as much. all aluminium wheels will corrode(or really oxidise) if subjected to the elelments so if paint chips or powder coat chips then the metal underneath will oxidise, but you wont see it really until it gets so bad that it lifts the paint.

this is the reason poeple say not to put clear laquer on polished rims, as once they chip water gets in and it is visisble as the surrounding paint is clear.

my wheels have only been painted in normal water based paint (the one i had as i resprayed the car) and they are four years old with no issues, but we dont have as much rain as you do. bottom line is paint is fine but you must look after the things as you would any painted panel, i.e. clean and wax them, fix and touch up stone chips etc etc

One thing I did forget to mention is that these wheels will be fitted with semi slicks and only used for track days which means that they will probably get an usually high number of tyre changes.

Dunno if that makes a difference of not?

With regards to price, there's hardly anything in it so that's not part of the dilema.

The local engineering works quoted me £9 per wheel to shotblast a painted wheel and £50 per wheel to shotblast a powdercoated as it much harder to remove.

personally i would paint them in this case, if they take a beating then they are easy to touch up.

FYI all the cars we use here in Bahrain have painted wheels (I do some track day instruction mainly in Catrhams here at the Bahrain Circuit)

i wouldnt powdercoat alloy wheels again, i had some alloys powdercoated and the finish was crap and they were very easily marked, paint them yourself with rattle cans if there going on a track toy then you can always blow them over again if need be

Paint 4, Powdercoat 0
