Drivable,Lee,but I have an engine management issue at the moment, running far too rich. Coupled with a huge flat spot at 2000-3000rpm.Got turned away from the MoT place on Friday afternoon as the 'car is not on the DVLA system!' Clever fella, could have told him that, talking to VOSA later on the 'phone revealed that it is up to the test station to enter the car on to the system, pretty much like they did when the computerised system first started! Going back to try again on Tuesday.Goes like a cat on speed, though, well pleased, little under 60mph for 2000rpm is perfect for my needs. The exhaust sounds cool as well! Discovered that door mirrors are 'handed' as well...grrrr... been painting the old, tatty black pair that came off the saloon to bolt on tomorrow.

My project has passed it's MoT this afternoon. Those who are keen followers of all threads will be aware that I had engine managment problems giving me serious rich running.I reviewed all the posts that zoners had made to help me,I THINK it was bob-s who gave me the final clue when he mentioned engine earthing..I fitted a brand new engine/frame earth lead and for good measure also an engine to battery neg lead, then I thrashed the thing's arse on some local back roads to sort out the ECU with the result that I now have an MoT certificate showing the French number plate. I now have to sort a few minor issues and regester and tax the beast.Roll on zone roam, this thing will give Hoshy's supercharged peashooter a run for it's money
Many, many thanks to all zoners for your help and support with this project, could not have got this far without you.
Youth is wasted on the young.
Glad to hear you sorted the running problem.

All hail, the conquering hero!
You do realise that you will either have to find yourself another project or talk to the missis more now, though

If it ain't broke, fix it till it is
I agree. I repaired mine with black silicone and a new strip a few years ago and no sign of rust yet!daimlerman wrote:I have also removed the rubber strip from the lower edge of the tailgate glass and filled the slot with black silicone,my theory is that water runs down the tailgate glass and enters this slot by capilary action and then cannot escape, thus causing rust to form.

Flying Saab for the roam ? Not a chance !! The touring will be in full flow for this fine event !!daimlerman wrote:Thought you were flying Saab this trip...thanks again to all(including Barry!) for your support, this has been one hell of a learning curve!georgen wrote:Hats off to you both Malc n' Hoshy,

Could not resist putting this one up! Just need to tidy up the wiring by the battery. Beemerbird, I was tempted by an ebay bargain end of last week...I now have a rusty 'L' plate touring in the garage that I am stripping the good bits off to finish this project, wish this had turned up 5 months back, would have saved me a lot of effort locating trim! Hope to regester and tax the 'folly' towards the end of this month.Youth is wasted on the young.

Mini update but no piccies...yet.... I have jumped through all of DVLA's hoops this week,I had a last minute issue when they moved the goalposts, informed me that as I could not produce a French 'V5' I had to produce an insurance certificate with the vin number on....and a letter on headed notepaper from BMW stating exactly when the thing was built... The insurance thing was just plain expensive, both of the current E30's are comprehensively covered so plan A was to switch the cover from a runner to the project for a day or two. Both of the companies I insure with would not issue a cover note for a vin number.I tried several specialist brokers and found that Adrian Flux would cover the car in the way I needed but at a price...my trousers were lowered to the tune of £439,to put that in persective, the 2.7 cost £127... the 316i with only 4 years no claims was £135,oh the joy of being an old fart!So I gave my credit card number and waited for the cover note.Presented all the documents at my local DVLA office and they relived me of a further £240
£185 rent and £55 regestration fee
then I was told that the thing would require a VIC (vehicle identity check) but at least this was 'free'.. the inspectors first words were,'I was expecting a LHD car...' so for a change I kept my big gob shut...thinking heck,SVA...The inspector was a decent fellow, hunted all round the M50 for an engine number without luck,so I showed him a copy of the V5 for the donor car and that kept him happy.I was eventualy offered an 'age related' plate...F641WFX..now FX was never issued back in the day so I turned that down and have transfered my retained plate from my classic Daimler that was sold to a German trader a little over a year ago...this is a three number three diget mark so it disguises the age but looks a bit strange on the BMW,I will get used to it.I then cancelled the outragous expensive insurance until I am ready to use the thing when I shall be able to simply transfer cover from one of the others.O a more practical note I have spent the last two or three weekends and several hours in the week trying to move the electric mirror switch to the r/h side.I eventualy solved the mystery today, not only are the mirror brackets different between LHD/RHD but the internal wiring to each mirror is different as well.I discovered that door harnesses are the same, drivers door/pax door just changes side but my problems only started there, far more wires in the drivers harness so the 'A' pillar sockets are different side to side...as this car unusualy has 'keep fit' windows all round but is wired for electric one's in the door harness's I was able to use spare wires to get the mirror switch out of the l/h door, this gave me one working mirror, swapping wires around and running one fresh one on the driver's side gave me both,at last! Current problems include fitting the glovebox and it's associated covers. But it's legal now and almost done!

Although the wiring for power windows is(was now!) in the door looms I have no switch looms. We prefer the simple option of keeping the 'keep fit' windows,it's our age... Exhaust is complete,Fritz manifold as pictured and standard GSF centre and rear sections. I had to shorten the Fritz downpipes where they run along side the gearbox so that they would mate with the standard centre.I also had to slice off the 'olive' type fitting on the front of the centre section and use a pair of sliding clamp type fittings, with a large dollop of sealer...1an wrote:daimlerman can i quickly ask you something
would you be intrested in selling the keep fit front touring windows? if so how much as my old man is coming on the zone roam![]()
and have you got the exhaust mated up yet?

......and and exterior shot, taken today at the Dovecote BMWCC meet close to Lincoln. To say that I am delighted with the way the car runs is an understatement,it is fantastic, well worth all my blood, sweat and tears. As soon as I was on the dual carriageway she rocketed up to speed and was almost silent as well,a true grand touring car.The regestration mark was retained from my Daimler, sold to a German trader last year.Youth is wasted on the young.

I have bought a new computer today,so at last I can bring you the exterior shot of the 'folly'... as I mentioned earlier, the reg. mark was retained from my Daimler, this at least gives me an excuse to keep my user name!Youth is wasted on the young.
