Yes.. Ports are too big tbh, but it makes a nice noise, and pulls well to the rev limit

It will need a competent fabricator to do the work..

Done sod all mate, but just ordered some Weitec 40mm springs. Koni Sport adjustable rear dampers have arrived also.

The problems with the Golf have cleaned me out a bit. Just got to get the other front suspension bits ordered now. It's Michelle's birthday next week, reckon she'll mind it I buy myself car parts instead of a present for her? :)

Well, got some M52 manifolds to try again, due to my well fangled steering column UJ I may get away without molestation, which would be a result. If not, then I have some virgin manifolds to work from. I think the S50 manifold will get moved on.

Done not a lot else other than order parts. Cleaned the garage up today so you can actually get in it and find tools

Won't be long before we're back now :D. I'm not sure you will get away with not modifying the rear mani though, I looked in to making a UJ like yours and if my measurements were right thn it wouldn't have cleared :( hope I'm wrong! You would need to take less off them though which is a bonus! :)

If the manifolds arrive in the week, with the lighter evenings now, I'll see if it fits, will be pretty obvious I guess, may even get away with grinding a bit off the edge of the flange, but got to be careful in this area as can't risk having no steering if the engine tilts too close can we :P

Ordered some Weitec 40/40 springs and new wishbones, they should be here in the week. May buy new calipers and am going to get new wheel bearings and front flexis, some braided ones possibly. Also some track rod ends, so everything is tight as a drum.

The bits are coming together, I just need to spend an hour or so tidying up the under arch areas and finish off undersealing the underside.

Hopefully with the suspension clobber that's going in it will ride with good poise.

your calipers are fine for now :) Just get it together :)
It's worth investing in an e36 rack rather than the e30 arm twirler lol

I wouldn't bother with the new calipers - costs just begin to spiral when you go down this road! Just give them a clean check the seals are ok and try them! If they work great :).

Are you planning on a dirty six rack conversion sometime? Now might be the time to do it so that you can be sure your manifold fits. You don't want to be going to fit an E36 rack in the future only to find you are going to need to recreate the manifold again!

OK will take a rain check on the calipers (after checking them over). Can't be fagged with the rack at the moment to be honest.

The springs have arrived this morning, got sent direct from Germany, they match the ARB nicely. The underside of the car is certainly looking a lot better than the top side :)

As said, now is the time to fit an E36 rack, manifolds that wont clear one are useless IMO

The E36 rack conversion is a piece of cake but it is really worth it. I re-routed the standard pipes so it cost next to nothing :). Honestly after all the work you have gone through an extra hour or so would be an hour well spent! :D If you get a rack I'll do it next time I'm up there!!

Is there any variation of the E36 racks? i.e is a 318 rack the same as a 325? Are the M3 racks any different?

Also, bare in mind my column UJ setup where I can't change the lower UJ spline......

Lower UJ spline slides straight on to the E30 one. Avoid the M3 racks as they are slow in the middle. Other than that they are all the same :)

Just been looking through some old pictures I had saved from when I was doing my car and found this. Think the picture is from a fellow zoner but it looks suspiciously like your steering UJ link and an unmolested M52 manifold!

This is the work of a guy from derby way I think, you can see the pipes have still had to be re-routed to miss the rack/cross member, you cannot bolt on a manifold/frontpipes without cutting/welding, no matter how much you faff about with the steering joint

This is my steering joint

I nearly went to crack one off after seeing that pic Daf posted above, but Dan has bought me back down to earth, cheers Lurch :)

So I take it I won't have any spline problems using this steering joint onto an E36 rack?

The bottom half of the M52 manifold obviously needs chopping off and mating up to the system - but it does look like you might get away without having to chop the main flange off. If this is true it might safe a fair ammount of time when creating the fannymould!

My E36 rack is in the front holes on the crossmember using all the standard E30 linkage - works absolutely fine :D

I tell you what, I'll be damned if I can get the 2 bolts even half way out when I tried to remove the rack before, is this usual or just my normal standard of failure?

Here is today's morsel delivery. Weitec stuff is actually made by KW, so hopefully should be alright, fronts look progressive a wee bit. 40/40 drop for touring.

the rack bolts can be a right pita if you have the rack twisted

hi lee
why do people seem to think that the manifold needs to be modified? this exact part was on my car for roughly 2000 miles with no problem.
if you are still having bother my advice is to remove o/s engine mounting and arm.
unbolt n/s mounting, jack the engine up a bit, then juggle the 2 manifolds into position, they do not go 1 at a time. also when tightening the nuts i used a swan neck 11mm spanner which i bent a bit to clear the primary tubes. any problems give me a call :)

If your talking about the s50 one, then you either had a big hammer or severe rot.

Ah, ok good call lee! make sure they are of good caliber and not tesco finest!

no rot on bulkhead, just sound deadening removed and a very small bit of the bulkhead was knocked back, nothing like 2" that is being mentioned here. i did all of the work myself so i know what i am talking about.
whats wrong with knocking the bulkhead back a bit anyway?
i would rather do that than spend £1200 on a manifold for a car thats worth half that.
