basically uve got a fault..... no point trying to bodge a start.... just try fixing it LOL
does sound VERY much like cam sensor to me.... but as u had it diagnostic'd, did it not show this fault, as i believe mine did show a fault code when this happened

a wild stab in the dark. does the coil(s) need an earth through the bracket to function correctly? it sounds like from the above post they may be lurking unmounted and not earthed...Demlotcrew wrote:I think sam needs to do weld the coil brackets first! then try again.

hmm i dont know bout that but it IS possible, although each coil has a loom going to it that 'may' contain an earthgareth wrote:a wild stab in the dark. does the coil(s) need an earth through the bracket to function correctly? it sounds like from the above post they may be lurking unmounted and not earthed...Demlotcrew wrote:I think sam needs to do weld the coil brackets first! then try again.

worth investigating, however if this was the case ud be getting a lot of fuel smell as fuel just built up and flooded the engine

just a quicky karan i have a fault code list for this vehicle and no cam position fault code but really code readers are never conclusive but a good starting point ,how many people have had a car in a garage and its had two or three items fitted to cure a fault-emiisions too high so monkey joe in local garage says ya cats gone and it fails again because oxygen sensor was the fault in the first place..... and coils wouldnt usually earth through bracket but lead may in some cases be attached to mounting bolt.

I know there's a fault! That's why I'm trying to narrow it down to either sparks or fueling. I'm not suggesting he tries to run the thing permanently on ether.Karan wrote:basically uve got a fault..... no point trying to bodge a start...
If you don't like ether, which is inconclusive because it will compression detonate, then try propane.
An hour ago, I tried a little experiment on an M40.
I pulled fuse 11 while it was running (fuel pump), and let it die.
I removed the flexi hose from the AFM and then stuck a hose from a bottle of propane into the flexi.
By turning the propane bottle slightly on, and operating the starter from the diagnostic socket I could keep the engine running for 10 seconds or so.
If you try this, you can either incriminate or eliminate the whole fuel system as regards your problem.

Haaalllooo,
Right, sorry for not replying. I went away last week, and left my dad to fix my car, and redecorate my room. Now that im back from hols, the room aint finished, so im currently on my brothers comp as mines in a heap somewhere.
Riiigggght.
Well, firstly i tried getting a new crank sensor off MarkE30, as this was what the diagnostic bloke said could be the main problem.
Got that, fitted it.But that didnt work. By this point it was 2 days before i went on holiday and i was trying to sort out a Cam sensor as this was the only other option i thought i had left. So i managed to get Demlot to send me both sensors (after Busting his balls with a lot of txt's ,cheers mate!) And then i waited to see if anyone rang me on holiday to let me know what had happened.
Well, i rang my dad, and he said that a parcel had come, so i thought "nice one, should be sorted soonish then" but he said ".....buuut, you wont be needing that"
He said there were two problems.
One was the fuel lines. He said they were on wrong-- Now i remember being unsure what ones were what when i was fitting them, so i looked it up.Found out what the feed and return on the engine were and then tried that, but still nothing. I then tried changing them round loads of times and still nothing. So i put them back to how they were and thought nothing of it.
Second was the leads. I put the coilpack up, with the plastic cover on the top that has the lead numbers on, and put them in order starting with 1 at the front of the engine working backtowards the bulkhead.
Anyway, that obviously wasnt the right way as now their in a differnt order.
But, after all that it runs.It smoked for a good 2/3 miles first due to the oil around the plugs etc.But runs fine now.Got lots of new hoses on order and gonna spend some time cleaning and tidying the engine bay all up.
So finally, id like to say a big thanks to Everyone on here for their advice and help.
Mark E30 for the crank sensor (ill get intouch about paying ya mate as i had to break my old one to get it off so i need yours now lol)
And Dave and Demlot, these guys were awesome, spent alll day up until midnight helping me, and demlots anwsered a lot of questions from me, so im sure hes fed up of me now!
Now begins the moding. Need to go faster
Chip and TB are on the list, as well as a new front lower valance if anyone has one as i bent mine (hero damage
lol)

you have to crank it a long time with the fuel lines on right before you get enough pressure to get it to start. maybe swapped around too quickly.
but you don't need to worry about that any more!

Good work Sams dad!
No problems with the help, glad its all fixed!
Toby the M42 has a pre prime system which pressurises the lines before the engine starts.

Lesson of the whole episode is: When you take something apart make notes, take photos, and make sure you know where everything goes back.
I've got five A4 sides of notes just from taking the wiring loom and hoses off my newly aquired M54.
