I have a 325 1989 E30

M20

All I want to do is swap my motor for a bigger one.

All the options, all the mods, all the hassle?

If I get a lump then what one? E30 M3, silly prices.

E36 M3? Prices?

335? Prices?

???

I have not got a clue about swapping.

My mechanic says give me 2 days and a motor but I want to make it easy for him so will need extras like all those little bits,
you know the ones ( I Dont! )

I put a 4.64 LSD on two years ago, can I keep it?

Can I keep my standard 325 SE Touring gearbox?

How much is a 90k 325 Piper cam motor worth?

Cam done at 87k all belts inc cam renewed.

Any pointers to forum topics much appech.

Ride Safe

M30 or M50/52

M30 is a big 3.5 litre juice drinking lump of pig iron but it makes an E30 pull like a train!

M50/52 is a more advance 24valve engine with very good power but dubious reliability with the M52 alloy block,M50 is a 2.5 litre,M52 is a 2.8 litre

If fuel economy wasnt an issue id go M30!

Drop a 3.5 M30 in there from a E34 5 Series, not expensive to do. 200bhp +

how deep are your pockets? thats the only real restraint on big ideas. and how easy/cost effective is your choice to tune up in future when you get bored of the power.you will get bored and want more, everyone does even though they originally insist 200/250/300bhp etc will be enough.

M30 you will idealy need an e34 535i engine and box,e28 535 radiator with electric fan, custom mounts (pm beefy) custom prop or use the flange off your 325i gearbox and the e30 prop can stay (though some say its not strong enough) im sure one of the downpipe flanges needs turning 90 degrees to clear the steering column, couple of wires needs swaping and your away!

M50,you will need an e34 525i engine, your m20 box/clutch/fly will fit onto it,vw golf or clio brake servo,e36 engine arms then gearbox mount mod(gearbox will sit at a different angle)then you have the butchering of the exhaust manifold to clear the steering column(much more brutal than M30 mani mod) then swap a few wires and your away!

M52 swap is very similar to the M50 swap.

if you have a decent budget for the conversion id go M52 with m50 inlet manifold and remap, you would see 210-220bhp plus they are light!

M30 is the easist way to gain power, amd I think its worth it.
Can say anything on any other conversion as i've only done the m30, easy.

Throwing numbers in the air:

£600 Motor/box and all bits?

Two days ( 16 Hours ) @ £30ph = £480

Brakes £500?

Thats £1580.

Forgot to mention new tyres as my F1's walls are shot £400.

Thats £1980.

Plus fitting of brakes labour and a couple of hundred quid left over for any issues.

What you think?

Buy a donor car so you can hear it running, there is always a risk in buying just the engine!

Its an auto 735 so box no good.

Kinda got my answer but could really do with a guide and list of all parts to do the 335i conversion.

I am surprised there is no how to guide here or maybe I just an't found it yet.

Cheers.

Alt quicker than a chipped 325i, as mine is a chipped m30 now.
You'll love it.
I still can't drive it at a respectable speed winkeye

It feels like it just wants to keep going on and on and on and on and on and on

I've not driven a modified 325i, only standard ones, but with the M30 engine it does pull well from low revs, and it pulled hard enough for my mates (almost standard U.K. model)Scccooooooobbbby Impreza to not be able to keep up down a dual carriage way! winkeye

Most n/a M30 E30s can run high 14s on the quarter mile, not bad for the cost of them! 8)
