Yes, take the V5 and registered keepers driving license to a BMW dealer and ask for a new key. Or change the ECU/EWS module for a set with a matching key and pull the Ig switch off the barrel

yea i would say its a dumb one to ask... it wont work from your z3 easiest way as Dan has said go to the dealers or get the stuff from an identical car

Did the Z3's not get twin vanos at some stage? This and other differences need to be taken into consideration, crank sensor is also in a different location on the last of the M52's so this will stop the engine running right and put it into the default map. If your not sure buy a key

Just do a leak down test on the engine. That should show up any serious problems.

Its black, about the size of a large matchbox and will have either a yellow or purple plug depending on which version.
You need to be sure the engines/management systems are the same before swapping them, if you put the ECU into fault mode the fault can only be removed with diagnostic equipment

To get the engine to run, without recourse to sessions with diagnostic/programming equipment, you need a MATCHING key chip, ECU and EWS module, all from the same car.
Commonly known as a thief kit.
