if i use my m42 gearbox will i need to still shorten the gear rods? and by how much?

is it worth seam welding the engine bay and sub frame while the engines out ? just in case i get more power later.

should i change the sump and rocker cover gaskets before fitting the m50?

how do you wire up the ews ?

a list of the stuff Ive got,

m50 engine
m42 gearbox
m20 lightened flywheel
m20 starter
wiring loom connector
engine mounts
m52 manifolds
m42 prop
m20 prop
big radiator 6 series i think

Anything else that ill need guys ?
you seem very confused mate.

M50's dont have ewsII only m52's
the m42 box will fit and you want an e30 325 prop
e28 m5 engine mounts
and an is rad will be sufficient.
you need a smaller brake servo
e34 throttle cable
and an electric fan.

as for seam welding... this isnt a vauxhall mate!!!
its has ews !
ive got a 2.5 prop
got mounts
got servo
need throttle cable
and viscous fan fits but might use an electric one

ditch the viscous or expect to buy a new rad every time you hammer the brakes...

ews isnt an issue anyway only a few wires.

Do you need to do this if the E34 gearbox and linkage is used?

And can I use my M40 linkage with the E34 box - and will it need cutting?

I used M40 'box (Getrang 240) with gearstick bracket/selector from a 320.This put the stick within quarter inch of centre of the tunnel hole. Near enough for me!I also used M20 fly with a 325 clutch.

I used them. No problems. It was a 523i. I thought there was no such thing as an e39 525i. The 2.5 is bdged as 523i like the later model e36.

E30 M3, E34 aircon, E36 aircon, or any number of fans from other makes. The choice is yours.

you mean the electric fan which install on the Condensor side ??

how about the radiator side ?? use back the fan clutch ???

my car have 2 fans, 1 fan clutch attached to water pump,
another 1 is at the air cond condensor...

i'm thinking get rid of the engine fan clutch & replace it with electric fan like m42.

You can't practically use the engine driven fan with a M50 conversion, without putting your radiator in serious danger. That's the whole point of fitting an electric fan in front of the radiator!
If you already have aircon, the fan already fitted will do the job.

Hi Everyone :)

We are starting our M20 to M50 swap this weekend after making the M20 go bang on our track car.

What we have so far:

Our E30 325i 1987 with dead M20

Our donor car is:

E34 525ix auto(dead) M50 touring 1993 Oct (which I think means Vanos) With aircon so we should have electric fan.

Any thing that jumps out from this combo let us know ;) things missing that we will need etc. I will continue reading the 35 pages through the week to get up to speed.

http://www.youtube.com/user/ricointheuk for some vids of us :)

the PAS pump may have 3 outlets instead of 2 so one will need blanking off

hi everyone (my english is bad so excuse me). you can use e36 2.0 or 2.5 engine holders on e30(or how you call them) it fits perfectly. if the engine is from e34 you need to moove them further to the middle off the engine. there are 6 holes in the engine block. 2 of them are unused and rosted. also you can use a vw lupo 1.4 brake vacum (that round big thing)

on the e34 engine use the e36 engine mounts (holders) in the same bolt holes. The lupo brake servo (vacum) havnt heard any thing about them most people use mk1 golf servos. :D hope you understand that

svaika is correct. E34 blocks have their engine mounts bolted to the front of the engine. To fit these blocks in an E30 you need to bolt E36 mounts to previously unused holes near the middle of the block.
The preferred servo these days is supposed to be from a Renault Clio.

If your engine is from a touring it will have 3 outlets on the pas pump, blanking one off does not work, been there, done that, you will need a pump off a saloon with 2 outlets.

Hi, I'm just starting the 'hard bits' as I see them anyway. I've got a 525 e34 engine. I got a plastic winged Clio servo, it looks as though the pushrod needs extending. Could anyone tell me if you have extended the pushrod? If so, what with, and is doing it a bit dodgy? Looks to me like the Clio rod needs to be a good inch longer to be the same length as the e30 servo pushrod! Thanks

I sliced 25mm of a stainless steel bolt and slid it down the master cylinder,as described earlier in this thread!
It was suggested to me that a spacer of 18mm was the correct size,I worked my way up in 3mm increments until I was happy with pedal travel.Your spacer needs to be a sliding fit,not tight, not rattling around,so that the pushrod does not wobble.
I found the easiest way to assemble was to hold the brake pedal fully down, then offer up the master.

thanks. Sounds like a plan. Did you countersink the end of your spacer to accept the pushrod?
