hi folks, has anyone done DIY window tinting? is it worth the hastle or is it best just to leave it to a profesional? ive put vinyl graphics on cars several times before but i think tints are a bit more flimsy and awkward. i fancy just a smoked look, not limo black

just got this reply from a tinting place
me not happy
It is not legall to tint the front doors, But they are not likely to be
bother by the police if it is only a mild tint as they have better things
to do, if you do tint the front doors then you can be given a Ԛ£60,00 fine
for the front doors each and three points on your licence but this can be
different as to the severety of the tint.

i reckon a light smoke wont get you into bother though, and it'll make the interior feel not quite as "open" as it does when standard.

not entirely sure but it is legal to tint the front doors
up to a certain extent, think it's about 35% max tint on front windows, 65% of light must pass through to be legal, and most now have meters to check this on the roadside

this is tha score on tintin......
want my done so got slippery & wet while surfin and found it at
http://www.sctints.co.uk/regulations.htm
The Window tinting Regulation was amended from 1st January 2004. This is a summary of the Regulation to help explain the information found on the Regulations page.
This Regulation amendment now clearly rules out any tinted films being
applied to driver windows (Front doors).
The Regulation states 70% of visible light must pass through the drivers
windows including any other substrate fitted to the glass. Many people
misunderstand the regulation and presume that 70% allows a 30% tint - It
doesn't! Glass does not let in 100% of light. Clear glass only allows
approximatley 86% of light to pass & the slight tint of standard
manufactured glass varies from the 70% maximum limit up to approx 80% of light passing through, thus any film being applied to these windows will drop the light transmissions to below the regulation limit.
If your front windows are tinted to any level you do risk being stopped
by either Traffic Police or VOSA (Vehicle & Operator Services Agency)
they have light meters to test the light that passes through your glass.
If you have a subtle tint fitted then you should just be asked for it to
be removed, if you have dark front door windows you could be told you
cant drive your car any further and face a fine and points on your
licence!
if thats of any help ..

I had my van rear window tinted a year back (80% ish tint) They had a sign on the wall saying the darkest tint they were allowed to fit by law to the front was 15%
Or do as my mate did, get dark tints, then just drive around with the windows down

my e30 is the only car i aint tinted yet i have always gone limo right round the back and a light smoke on the front doors and have never been bothered. i think alot of it is down to the car that is tinted. my brother in law (many years ago ) used to have a saxo all tinted out amd got stopped every week without fail, and at the same time i had my granada cossie all tinted out slammed on its arse on 18"and never got bothered.
