I am about to get my final bits off magpie for my conversion. Now I just gotta find somewhere in which to do it and an engine crane!

Buy one second hand, then sell it for the same price after you're done :D

cranes are cheap buy one and then sell it on, or why dont we all but some money in a pot and buy one and who ever needs it next pay for postage to them, we could just have it for the zone.

No an S52 conversion. Just tought I would post it up in the m42 section for the hell of it :teehee:

Only playing, yeah my m42 has been sat in my mates garage for a while. I cant use his garage as he can only just get his 106 in there so no chance of my e30!

Ok stupid question here..... I am full of them. If I have the gearbox I assume the clutch is part of thatg assembly

Clutch is bolted to the fly wheel on the engine if thats what you're asking :)

I have the engine bolted to the gearbox so would assume the clutch deeley is there. I know engines and more or less how they work but my knowledge of a clutch extends to how to use it.

If you bought it as a complete unit I would be suprised if some one bothere to take the clutch out.

The fly wheel is bolted to the crank, there is a pressure plate which bolts to that and a drive plate inbetween the two. When your foot is down on the peddle it pushes on the middle of the pressure plate and realises the drive plate (allowing you to change gear), when you take your foot off, it takes the pressure off of the middle of the pressure plate which then clamps its self back firmly onto the drive plate allowing power transfer.......and shit

If that makes sense sure there's a better way of putting it :P

No worries, I figured it would probably be there, but I wanted to make sure is all. I must sound like a right muppet.

hello,

I'm attempting this later this week / next week and am a bit concerned about the 1.8 box not fitting the m42 due to shaft sizes. I am hoping this was due to the spigot bearing wearing around the 1.8is box and so that is what it was used to, and a new spigot bearing would mean the 1.8 box would fit.

Also if the 1.8 box fits what's to stop me from using the propshaft? as I assumed the m42 block mounts the same as the m40 as its effectively the same block. I do have a 318is prop but it has a worn centre bearing and don't want to have to swap the bearings as they sound hard work to setup properly.

Gearbox, prop and diff (unless LSD) are the same on 318is as for 316i or 318i.

I swapped my M42 in with the box, prop and diff that were still in the car from 316i m40.

BMW list the same part no for gearbox for m40s and m42s, and the prop is the same length so all will work fine.

Really? I thought the IS has a different box (Getrag 260?), which is longer requiring a shorter prop? I assumed that the mounts would be in the same place(same block, same style of arm etc.) and the bolt pattern is the same so you can bolt either gearbox to it but you'd need the relevant prop. As far as the gearbox input shaft is concerned, since people put m40 clutches on m42s successfully, I figured the splines must be the same. A quick check of realoem seemed to suggest that the spigot bearing inside diameter increased after 09/1990 so that was the only thing I thought I'd have to check.

I am doing this swap as well, well I would be if I could actually get to the car.

I plan to use the m40's getrag 240 box with its original prop, the single mass flywheel and clutch that's already on my m42 a 12x32x10 spigot bearing as fitted the m40 engine originally and with luck everything should fit. I'm also using e34 m50 engine mounts, I've been told these are appropriate but I don't know myself yet. I've got a rad from an e36 320i that I plan to use but I can't imagine the fan cowling will be right (ah, I just recall I destroyed the cowling on an autotest anyway). Not sure about exhaust yet, someone promised to sell me an m42 one but I can't get through to him, I've also thought about adapting the m40 one but I'm less keen on that.

I have some m50 coil packs so I'm tempted to do the COP conversion, I have access to CNC machining so I'll get a plate made up easily.

It's not true, I was under the impression I could have run the M40 prop with the M42 gearbox.

7pm on the last day of my swap, all I had to do was fit the prop and connect the battery, only to find out the M40 prop was too long. I then had to go about swapping the centre bearings over because the one on the M42 prop was shagged.

Due to inexperience and lack of a proper sized bearing puller, I wasted a lot more time than I should have buggering about.
Not in E30s any more :(
