Can't help you with that fault but if it's anything like my E60 M5 then get used to visiting your BMW dealer!

I think you need a GT2 to read faults on an E60, I have had my 535d M sport since December and done 10k miles its not missed a beat.

I don't know any indies that are doing much with E60's, as all the stuff is encoded differently than CarSoft etc can manage.
I've got a 550i Touring as my sensible car, and again, no issues with it at all...

I have the 19"s on mine non runflat with 275 rears and it handles very well, my 630i with 17"'s and runflats is a tram-lining nightmare!
Like I said you need the GT2 for any work on the E60's electrics.

old_skool, sorry for the interruption. Are you finding your e60 M5 going through about a liter of oil every 2k miles or so ?old_skool wrote:Can't help you with that fault but if it's anything like my E60 M5 then get used to visiting your BMW dealer!
Just curious.

I got the dealer to dump the runflats on mine when I bought it.
I went from runflats on 18's to normal tyres on 19's on the Z4, and the difference is amazing, better ride (even with lower profile, wider tyres), much better grip and feedback.
Out of interest, what brand are your runflats? There's a massive difference between brands as I found out when I had my 1er...

My car doesn't use runflats and I can't say I've ever owned a car with them to comment. I am running Continental 255/40/19s on the front and (iirc) 295/40/19s on the rears.
Regarding the oil issue - I am currently using around 300ml per 1000 miles, so around 1 litre per 3200 miles. I guess that's around about right for a fire breathing 5ltr V10.
I look on the bright side - before long it will suffer another software crash so they can top it up with oil and wash it whilst it's there (getting a spotty 14 year old to reprogram it). That is the only bright side however, considering the inspection II is around £1500 and front discs, pads and four tyres were very recently £2200.
It's a shame in some ways, as much as I bought it for it being a very good BMW, I feel a bit let down with it because of silly problems. The one thing that has surprised me is that I have really fallen for the E60 shape. Bangle designs seem to have that effect on me. Something I didn't really get until I spent time with one.

Shame about the issues with the M5 Damo!
My dad ran a couple and an M6 with no issues.. He's had loads of E60's with no problems also..
The 635d is in for a fair bit of work atm though.

Dan, it's all silly things.
Since Christmas it has been to the dealer four times. First was a throttle actuator fault which gave a 'reduced power' warning in the I-Drive, then there was a fault on the steering wheel, then the LSD started clunking so they had to carry out a service bulletin repair to it. The last thing was a transmission fault warning - whilst I was watching telly of all things! They had to reprogram the gearbox and it wiped out the I-Drive and all the settings. One week later and they had it nailed.
To be fair, I am being harsh. It's really a astonishing car. What I do find annoying is you take a car like that in and they give you a 1-series to use while they are repairing it!

Yeah that is a little out of order.. Like for like.. I am sometimes astounded at dealers incompetency to fix stupid little issues on the newer (and sometimes older!) car..
My mothers 120d for example, drivers heated seat, only heated the back of the seat, took it in, had new elements put in, still doesn't work and they've wired the switch back the wrong way round!! Gentle heat on the switch is now full heat and visa versa!!

I had a problem 7 Series, the first car released with the I-Drive and it was a proper pain used to spend more time at the dealers than on my drive. Its only bad one I have had though.
