No! I mean a there IS a difference in the finish between the earlier and later versions of this wheel!bss325i wrote:You mean worn shiney leather.Rodderz wrote:I prefer it in the earlier shiney leather!m4xos wrote: how much are these new then?

So you've owned both your steering wheels from new?
Barry I have owned both wheels and so has a friend of mine, and we both say that 100% without doubt the finish of the 2 wheels is different! The earlier wheel has a shiney top coat applied to it! on the wheel on my cab the sheen has come off on the top edge. At first it looked like it had the greasy stuff off of your hands that you get on a mouse! So I thought thats ok I will just clean it off,but unfortunatly it wasnt dirt,it was the finish coming off and all my cleaning did was remove more of it!
Apply a bit of common sense,if its only wear.........how does the centre cover leather end up with the same sheen as the rim?

Leather doesn't just wear through friction.Rodderz wrote:Barry I have owned both wheels and so has a friend of mine, and we both say that 100% without doubt the finish of the 2 wheels is different! It is not exactly the same wheel!
I recognise that you,Barry, are probably the most
knowledgeable person on this site when it comes to Alpina's,and on anything else I would accept any information you give as gospel!
I would need to be extra/doubly/100% sure of what I was saying before i questioned you,and on this issue I am!
They share the same part# as you have said in a previous thread, but the manufacturing of the wheels has changed sinse it was introduced in 1987!

I had a new wheel fited to my two year old M5 last week at Wood BMW Hampshire. It was replaced because there was a section of leather peeling. The difference between the two wheels, old and new, is astonishing. The new wheel's stiching is brighter and the wheel has a much more matte finish and is very noisy with hands gliding over it. It is also very 'grey' compared to the shinier wheel that preceeded it.
That is simply what happens to leather. It gains a patina and shine as it hardens and takes on weathering, sunlight and grease. Look at a 20 year old sport trim for exmple.
I also had a new replacement early style Alpina wheel on my C2 2.7, that had a matt rim in comparison to a more aged glossy example. I don't believe the lather is any different, or processed any differently than it was 20 years ago.

For interested Australian parties I have managed to find out that these 3 spoke Alpina wheels are available via our dealers.
Cost?
550 pounds.
I put it in pounds so that you UK lot can have a laugh.

That is a f*cking piss take! Can't you get some one to order one in the uk and sent it back to you? Will that work out cheaper or do you have to pay some stupid taxes?AlpineAde wrote:I mean 550 of your English pounds.
A tad over $1200 Australian dollars.
And I don't think the joke ruined at all ~ it just got funnier I reckon.

It's been mentioned a few times on this forum that we poor Aussies get a tad shafted on parts. True words!
Unfortunately, Barry, I've no family left alive in the UK anymore so no can do on the get-the-wheel-bought-and-posted.
I'm following up an American lead at present. We'll see how that goes. One can always hope and generally parts are half to two thirds the price of what we pay ordinarily.
We have to pay tax/duty on anything over $1000, so the wheel wouldn't incur any charge as 250 quid is around $550.

We suffer a real lack of parts in Australia and such things as these never, ever appear. As an example, I've only ever seen one Nardi wheel for sale in the country. Bit backwards, us lot! LOL!
