I was thinking along the lines of buy the strut brace bar. remove the badge then sell the strut brace you just bought to make some money back. if the bar stays at about 20euro plus shipping.

Sorry David! For what it's worth neither have turned up yet, and I have my doubts whether the sump guard will fit over the massive sump.

On the subject of the sump, I have a Hartge catalogue from 89/90 which lists the oil capacity as 9 litres..... 9 litres of TWS 10w60 is not cheap!

Are you going to take a mould of the sump guard Theo? May be worth while keeping a copy just as an backup should the original get damaged.

Thats got to be a £100's worth.

I am also looking into some better grade oil for my turd and it doesn't come cheap compared to trade club semi!

I think I might settle on 10w50 though.

Not a bad idea at all, not sure where I could get it remade in Kevlar though?

Jon, I have heard conflicting opinions on running expensive oil vs bog standard oil with regular changes. The project is costing a fortune so why not drop another £100 of some oil! :hammer:

May be worth speaking to Alex (Turbo-brown) He has had some good success with making carbon bits so may be able to advise on kevlar.

Isn't kevlar like fiberglass on steroids? I'd presume it would be much the same procedure in laying it up, only issue if it needs to be bunged in an autoclave to cure.

Indeed! I would have thought 60 was too thick unless you are going to experience massively high oil temperatures though... Which you may? I am not sure on what oil cooler provisions and how hot an s38 cooks the oil. Not that it matters atm, as a 10w50 is around £45 a tub anyway, although halfrauds have some MOOOOTSPORT 10w50 for £27...

Dave, Alex may well be worth talking to - it all depends on whether the sump guard will actually fit the car I suppose.

Jon, 10w60 TWS is what BMW recommend for the s14/s38 - they do run quite warm.

Henry, I'm not sure they'd be qualified to work on the car mate... what other things have they worked on? :)

10/60 TWS is the shizzle especially when the oil temp is above 100 degrees. Which i'm sure this poor S38 will suffer, Theo may have childrens sized feet but he can stamp the wee things hard!

Still not really intending on taking it to the Ring, I will take it on a derestricted part of the autobahn though, to see if it will hit 280km/h :)

Need two 215/40/17 Y rated tyres and two 245/35/17 Y - hard to find a tyre which in made in both sizes in that speed rating, can't get Eagle F1s in 245/35 anymore which is annoying. So it may have to be Falkens on the rear and F1s on the front which is a bit council.

Run 235/40 instead? Can run T1-R's all round, or Hankook RS-2's..

235/40 is a bit too big (in an ideal world) and T1-Rs are W rated, which would limit me to a sedate 168mph (272km/h).

Hankook K110 V12 EVO is the only tyre I've foun available in both sizes, but Hankook is a bit low-rent isn't it?

235/40 is only a tiny bit larger than 245/35 iirc.. That is the combo I am running

Most Hankooks are yes.. The RS-2 on the otherhand is an excellent tyre (shit in the snow though), even Demlot loves them!

When Z-speed rated tires were first introduced, they were thought to reflect the highest tire speed rating that would ever be required, in excess of 240 km/h or 149 mph. While Z-speed rated tires are capable of speeds in excess of 149 mph, how far above 149 mph was not identified. That ultimately caused the automotive industry to add W- and Y-speed ratings to identify the tires that meet the needs of new vehicles that have extremely high top-speed capabilities.

W 168 mph 270 km/h Exotic Sports Cars
Y 186 mph 300 km/h Exotic Sports Cars

While a Z-speed rating still often appears in the tire size designation of these tires, such as 225/50ZR16 91W, the Z in the size signifies a maximum speed capability in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h; the W in the service description indicates the tire's 168 mph, 270 km/h maximum speed.

225/50ZR16 in excess of 149 mph, 240 km/h
205/45ZR17 88W 168 mph, 270 km/h
285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h

Most recently, when the Y-speed rating indicated in a service description is enclosed in parentheses, such as 285/35ZR19 (99Y), the top speed of the tire has been tested in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h indicated by the service description as shown below:

285/35ZR19 99Y 186 mph, 300 km/h
285/35ZR19 (99Y) in excess of 186 mph, 300 km/h

As vehicles have increased their top speeds into Autobahn-only ranges, the tire speed ratings have evolved to better identify the tires capability, allowing drivers to match the speed of their tires with the top speed of their vehicle
