That's one of the reasons you buy a BMW! You've got a steering wheel in your hands - keep the boot in and correct it.
Whatever you do, don't lift of, unless you want to learn a quick substitute for a three point turn.
"Ultimate driving machine" isn't just a sales slogan, but it does require a "driver".

When you say keep your foot in, shouldn't there be some degree of modulation i.e. if it's going too far, lift a little to bring it back a bit

modulation is for wimps, spinning out is for HEROsTurbo-Brown wrote:When you say keep your foot in, shouldn't there be some degree of modulation i.e. if it's going too far, lift a little to bring it back a bit
delboy, just watch yourself with it in the wet
best idea is to get an nice empty car park and try to figure out when the car 'breaks' so you can get a feel for how close to the limit you are.
take care and have fun with it mate

I was thinking the same thingTurbo-Brown wrote:When you say keep your foot in, shouldn't there be some degree of modulation i.e. if it's going too far, lift a little to bring it back a bit
I might not be a HERO but at least I'll be alive
I think the point is that you definately shouldn't lift off the accelerator sharply. Also you probably shouldn't lift all the way off unless you've really gone too far and then it's probably best to stand on the brake pedal and get the wheels to lock, that way you will at least travel in a straight line (the way your momentum was heading) until you stop, unless that is towards something solid of course.

Think probably the best advice up there is to practice where you can't hit anything.
Also, start small when you do transfer it onto the open road.
It's pretty easy around tight radius corners as you don't need much speed to look heroic, big open sweepers need more speed and as such you need more skill to mitigate against the risk
EDIT> just a thought, is it possible to tell the 'box to stay in one gear? Can't imagine a mid-drift shift would do much for your control over the car

most auto's have like P R N D 3 2 1 selectionsTurbo-Brown wrote:Think probably the best advice up there is to practice where you can't hit anything.

if you select eithe r 3, 2, or 1 then it holds it in that gear rather than changing up
so he probably can keep the box in one gear

I agree.astondg wrote:I think the point is that you definately shouldn't lift off the accelerator sharply.
A mate of mine bought a mint 325ise when we were at college. I never got the chance to go in it, cause his first trip in the wet resulted in him fish tailing out of a junction and then lifting off the accel pedal sharpish. The tyres gripped when he was broadside across the road and he nose-dived into a deep ditch. It was no longer mint

Camber (if thats the right word??) on the road will kick the rear out if you floor it and its a bit wet.delboy8000 wrote:what freaked me out was that i was going in a straight line on the m/way!maybe i had turned the steering slightlty
Ive had it in mine when pulling away from a set of lights (read racing an Astra GTE to the next roundabout). The road is totally straight and as I changed into second, accelerated hard the rear broke away to the left, towards the kerb. I still beat the GTE but it would of been more convincing if I had traction
Most/all roads have a slight camber (lean) to them to help water run to the edge of the road so it doesnt just sit in the middle. I guess motorways are the same in that respect.
As said, go and practice where you cant (or shouldnt

mine when i had an open diff in it temporarily was shocking.... it would spin up til 4th gear in the wet
once when changine into 4th at 80ish,..... the back just swung out on coutry lane
much better with lsd now and so controllable
