The sump does - it's got a nasty crack on it.

It seems that the crank isn't that colour from BMW, so perhaps Hartge have fiddled with that as well. I'm looking forward to putting this thing on a rolling road!

That blue is just a coating Theo, ive had cranks with a load of blue and cranks with just a little bit, yours looks like it had a big dollop though

Did have a bid on that but was far too low in my estimation of what it would go for!

With regard to the crank I was told this, which is an interesting read.

If you take a piece of polished steel and heat it slowly in a furnace or open flame the oxide layer on the surface changes colour with temperature. This change of colour is one way that engineers tell how far a piece of steel which has been hardened is subsequently tempered to give a specific tensile strength and to make it useable for tools etc in the workshop.

The colour of the oxide layer turns from clear to a faint yellow colour at around 425 deg F bcoming darker yellow as the temperature increases to around 460 deg then changing through yellowish brown, light to dark purples, "polish" blue, dark blue and finally to pale (almost invisible) blue at about 625 deg F after which the colour dissappears.

I suspect the colour of your crank is from the final tempering operation after the journals have been hardened. Other cranks may have been tempered at slightly different temperatures and turn out without colour at all the temperature difference between leaving it dark blue like yours and with almost no colour at all is only 25 deg F, well within manufacturing tolerance and could simply be down to the position of the crank in the furnace when it was heat treated.

I've learnt something today, you wouldn't have thought 25 deg F difference could alter it from that nice blue back to steel coloured would you. Makes sense as to why they have been seen in both colours.

New wheels to go on the car;



17x7.5 front and 17x8.5 rear. Need to get a set of Goodyear Eagle F1's in 215/40/17 and 245/35/17 as it's pretty much the only tyre I've found which is available in both size other than the Hankook V12 which is a bit of an unknown quantity.

You may remember that I mentioned the sump was damaged, well it's now been repaired. I heard from a previous owner of the car (Wendy) that when the sump was smashed it was repaired and the total cost of the work..... £1600! I had a local engineering place fix the sump and also weld the broken mounting lug back onto the gearbox. They also added some bracing to the lugs on both sides to prevent it from happening again.

The steering wheel was long gone, old photos of the car show it will the horrid Momo thing that it came with. I rekon there was a quick fingered employee at the breakers or when the recovery truck took the car as there are three valuable things missing which can be removed without any tools - spark plug spanner, gearknob and maplight mirror Wonder where the gearknob ended up?

There are 4cyl and 6cyl hartge strut braces for about 20euro on ebay.de . the 6cyl one still has its badge. Mind you they each have about 3days left. search hartge e30
