Your car must be an early facelift model. This system was introduced in anticipation of some European legislation that didn't happen, and was dropped after several months.
On the LH inner wing, there are two black round two pin plugs and sockets. Just pull these apart, and the system will be disabled.
If you follow the wires from the plugs that are going towards the front of the car, you will find the resistors, mounted right at the front of the inner wing. These can be removed if you want, or just left and ignored.

Disconnecting these plugs shouldn't upset the check panel!
If you do murran's mod, you'll just have full dipped beams on in the sidelight position!

The lights are normal! It's now wired as most E30s are. Whatever is turning your bulb check light on, it's not the disconnecting of the resistors.
The resistors are mounted in a place where they are vulnerable to road dirt, and most have disconnected themselves by now in any case.

I pulled the 2 plugs apart on my motor this morning as I've recently fitted HIDs. Before I fitted them, I had the same "half glow" for side lights and the check panel stayed nice and quiet. Now with the 2 plugs disconnected (behind the header tank).. the check panel light comes on for dipped beam when pulling the headlight switch to the sidelight position. Pulling it right out to headlights doesn't cause any check panel lights to appear though. This is running on an E-plate facelift motor with all lights functioning just fine before and after HID fitment.
Just a FWIW.
