Oil Leak from the the oil cooler take off
Moderator: martauto
i have a slight oil leak from the the oil cooler take off.
it seems to be seeping from the under side where there is the round body with the what looks like a screw in (under the body where the pipes come out)
what can be done about it? i mean, how can i fix it?

Small repair kit of modified parts from the dealers. Very common - minor design fault.
It would be best to take the part off, which comes off with one single bolt once the oil filter is removed, from memory I think it is 19mm but worth checking. Unless you want to rebuild it lying under the car (I don't know if you have ramps?) it is probably worthwhile to take the oil cooler out as well so you can fit the kit to the sandwich plate away from the car.
The kit that Brian mentions is easy to fit, the only fiddly bits are compressing c clips and things like that. You will get all the seals, and new clips etc from BMW. I have had no problems with mine since replacing all the parts.
Good luck.

just took a pic...

the drip can be seen on it. just ordered a kit form cotswold and gonna have a go on sunday...
few questions though... do i need to drain the oil? any special tools? can i undo the 17mm (just checked) nut and the filter housing thing will fall off, then change it that way without taking the oil radiator off? if the car is on ramps that is...

you can change it with the housing still attatched to the block
you need to press the star shaped plug in and remove the circlip, you will get a bit of oil come out but not much!
remove the plug along with the spring & thermostat thing, replace in order it came out with the new plug,
the tricky part is holding the plug in whilst getting the circlip back on,
i used a deep 8mm socket on the end of the plug and held it there with quick grips while putting the circlip back on!
(if that makes sense)

felt so proud, even tried it with a E30 325i and got put in my place..
Thats all the parts that I recieved from BMW also! it did the trick on mine! Plug first then circlip, its also sprung from inside, so takes a bit of pressure on that plug thing to allow the circlip to fit. I did however get a lot of oil down my arm as I did it in the car park in my lunch break
I think it was just the contents of the oil filter, but it seems like a lot of oil when its falling down at you!

That's all the bits you need - the O ring is supposed to be made of a different material and to be of a different profile than the original.

Got the part number from this, and the price?
Local BMW knobs wanted £110 for an O-ring. I said E30 and they said "7 series, right?"
Mine's pissing oil from the same place... Has been for a while!

Did this the other night. About a litre of oil came out and it took me about 2 hours of making cups of tea and chatting. About 40 minutes of actually doing the job. Was quite difficult to compress the spring back into itself - I had someone help me so that I could push up with two hands whilst the other person had two hands on the circlip pliers. Not as bad as I thought, but not a piece of p!ss.
