ok guys so waitinf bits an pieces for the engine, so i moved onto brakes

Bought a set of Range Rover Vogue 3.5 V8 Calipers, these are 4 pots made by AP Racing, for £35 buy it now on ebay, 100% working order need a tidy though, soooo

just got in and thought ill put them up against the strut to see what i need to work with, the mounts on the strut are exactly the same as on the caliper, no joke, and im going to be using Golf G60 discs (which need 1mm taking out of the bore, to fit the hub) and the offsets so far are lining up to be pretty much perfect.....

Is this one of these fluke things??

Ill get pictures on the weekend!

So i need to work out the distance i need to move the caliper out by and thats it....

So 280mm 4 pot brake set up anyone for £100 or there about???? :D :D im itching to get on with this bit!

Whats the best material to use for adaptors?

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Minimum of 12mm steel plate or you could use aluminium(15mm)

Only other thing you'll need is a 2mm spacer from keriwms to bring the disc face back to the same as standard BMW. Get some pics up as I have loads of range-rover stuff lying about but never thought about using the calipers. Have you checked the standard thickness of the range rover disc is the right width for the 22mm vw items?

I spent a while on the phone to an AP Supplier and basically he said to me that the standered range rover runs 25mm disc, and that the only thing i will notice is the pads at about 75% of their life the brake pedal will feel a little longer, but i wont have issues like the pistons going to far out etc......so changing pads a 75% and keeping an eye on them seems a fair trade off to me ha!

Have you got a link to the spacer?? I mean if the offsets are slightly out iv got some play in the brackets, like making them a little thicker or taking 2mm off where they mount if its that small a distance??? maybe??? new to this so point me in the right direction!!!!

If you look at this you can just about see the 2mm lip left between where the vw disc is sitting and where the bmw disc would sit. I just pm'd keri-WMS on here and got the spacers for like £20ish

http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... c&start=25

this link about half way down might explain it better.

I was thinking of the rear range rover 2pots which have a disc thickness of 12mm so fronts will be fine @ 25mm.

So as requested here are photos. They need a little bit of paint but are in full working order...and yes track rods and everything are just sitting in there for the moment!

Image

First bit, wierdly the space in the caliper where the disc sits is only 19mm :? :? :? I read up and they were supposedly 25mm, unless they were used on non vented discs????

Image

So first question can that part be milled down a couple of mm either side to accomendate for a 22mm disc or does it have to be spaced out in the caliper? Like splitting the caliper and having a 3-4mm steel spacer made??

Image

Then, well hear you can see they bolt straight onto the existing strut mountings, so easily enough when it comes to the adaptors at least the holes will be in line with eachother....

Image

So next bit, as you can see the offset isnt to far off, with it mounted on the front (this might well be wrong!)
but when i have discs etc through at least ill be able to work it up......

i guess :?

I hate to say it but the G60 disc would probably hit the lug of your caliper, even without the head of the bolt! :? You'll need much flatter discs for that to work...

Holy crap, those calipers must weigh a TONNE!

Couldn't just move them to the other side of the lugs could you, or would that push them too far towards the middle of the car?

to be honest i reckon that these callipers are no good for the e30.
wheel clearance is going to be a major issue with them mounted as they are in the picture. if the callipers are too short in width also, forget about it.

i dont mean too piss on your fire but im sure there are better ways to upgrade. can 7 series calipers not be fitted? or i think i read on the zone about somebody using nissan calipers.

car looks good anyway so stick at it. :P

Magpie, thanks again for the comments!!

Alex, they are huge! For something that cost that much it was well worth a shot, I mean 4 pots made by AP for £35! its annoying how wide the mounts are for the caliper, if i move it to the other side unfortunalty theres no chance in hell ill be able to get it to mount onto the disc.....
I had such a long convosation with Keri for WMS about them, as he said in the top photo on this page, the head of the bolt would properly foul the disc, but if there was a way round that all i would need to do is space out the caliper for a 22mm disc instead of 19mm.....

Anyhow im going to save myself a bit of work and go for the 4 pot kits hes got for sale, as to be fair for a bolt on kit there a damn good price....

Iv got another pair of struts that have turned up so im going to keep trundling with them and see what i can come up with!

Baptie, i checked it out, wheel clearance would just about scrape by with my compomotives, but as you said short in width tends to be a no no, there are ways around it...however i did some more research and they did do a caliper for the vented 25mm discs but telling which is which you can only do my getting them and measuring it!

Skyline Gtr calipers can be used, the GTST ones have a slightly lower profile then the GTR ones, you can also use RX7 calipers, theres some for sale on e30tech and the mounts for them too!

But soooo much weight! And it purely unsprung too!

Our old 2 series Volvo had iron four-pot front calipers which weighed absolutely masses too. Nice design though, they had split hydraulic circuits too, so that in the event of failure of a brake circuit, both front calipers would still function, albeit on just the two pistons.....anyway. But it still left you with both front brakes working and one rear.

For ease and peace of mind, it's gotta be worth going with a proven kit dude :D

i have willwood four pots on my scrapper.

still on the original rear drums, but it stops well enough for the highlands!!!.
the willwoods perform very well for a cheap set up, but i reckon rear disks are on the cards, due too the new spec, as the pedal has too much travel.

yea im really leaning towards the WMS kit, just the fact that i can bolt it on with no problems and not have to worry about it!!!

Alex i may need to you to pop over sometime, im having some issues in the engine bay! they cylinder head has no timing marks and i cant really do much else until i get that cambelt on!
How you getting on with yours??

No worries dude, gimme a shout if you need :D I'm progressing slowly!

Have a good clean on the front of the 'head around the top side. The timing mark is only a very thin line scored across the 'head which could easily get covered in poop.

Ah right ok :) Will be chopping the middle out of mine but to save some weight :)

Yeah both my fans are, picked up the big one (11inch push) from a scrap yard cheap :) and I also have a 9inch pull one but I don't have a use for it any more so unless any one wants it I'll just plonk it some where lol.

Ok, so its been a while! Just moved into my new/first house so things have been kinda hectic! but knuckled down an got some bits and pieces done....

Image
So cambelts on with a original pulley, got a vernier to go on when the tunings being done.
Heads in the process of being bolted down now with the ARP studs....more booost :D
Inlet manifold sorted although stupidly i forgot about the angle of the engine, soooo, my bonnet doesnt shut hence the pictures.....

Image
Image

its either cut a hole in the bonnet or leave it standing at the back by about 3 inches....
Image
Image
Even if i do cut the bonnet i will still have to raise the back up...my issue is as the photo will show, i have no chance in hell of clearing the inlet manifold....

Boost piping is nice an easy, although i had to ditch the oil cooler position to do so. So any ideas on where to mount it???? Im fresh out of space between the ic and rad.....
Image
Need to get all the water pipe work in now, sort the fuel lines, and block the p/s.

Really tempted to ditch the abs, but i really cant be fannyed to do it! just want this thing moving!!

At least the engine looks more complete!

Sorry I haven't read the first 5 pages of this thread, but why have you gone for a custom inlet manifold?

Seen plenty of 500+BHP m20 turbo setups using the stock 325 inlet manifold?

ok so were getting somewhere now!

The megasquirt arrived from the states guy on e30tech builds them (all plug and play), iv just got to fix up all the coolant lines.

Whats the best way to block off the powersteering at the rack? shorten the hoses, join and fill up with fluid???

got to get the front pulleys all on aswell....

I fitted the cambelt however turning it over by hand just to ensure everythings good the cambelt always wants to pull off the top pulley....1.5 rotations of the engine and the belt is almost half off the top pulley.....any ideas????

If anyone has a diagram off how everything is on the front end would be great!

So im still trying to find someone to store my 5 series so i can get the e30 up to my house, but i did somework over the weekend on it

Unfortunatly im going to have to ditch the idea of the itb's at the moment. I just want to get the thing running as a potentiol 'ring trip and a few drift events coming up im in need of a car.

I just cant get the boost pipework to run smoothly without rearraging alot of factors practically setting myself back 6 months.

So the standerd gay manifold is going back on.

People to any modifications to the tb before putting it back on to run with fi???

Another day ill get the throttle bodies and plenum sorted and on but for the time being i just want to drive it.....

plus it gives me an excuse to find another e30 an build a hot n/a engine with itbs!!
