Well the M1 did use a 6 pot 3.5 Litre. I think it was then used in other M cars. :?

didnt the M1 share the same engine as the E28 M5,
S88 i think!

It was an M88 used in the M1 with about 270 bhp. It was revised and gave 286 bhp but still called an M88 and was used in the E28 M5 and E24 M635CSi.

that is what I meant.. what I was thinking and what letters my fingers trod on were 2 different things however

M88/3 to be accurate, but commonly referred to as the M1 engine - later became the S38 in 32.5, 3.6 and 3.8 guises. In M88/3 it was in the E28 M5 and E24 M635CSi - not the NA M6 though, it got the S38.

I think that's actually a pretty useful historical reference point. If it wasn't built in the late 80s, it has been built to look like it was. While they're not to everyone's tastes a few of these mad creations from that era need to be kept or recreated.
