For £1500-£2000?
I'm open to anything really. I dont want anything too practical and boring but I dont want anything completely impractical either.
Needs to be quick, ie no slower than a 325i e30.

I'm quite tempted by a 5 or 7 series. But I wont rule out an e30.

I would get an E36 328i Coupe - for £2k you should get one which has been looked after and not councilled.
A 5 or 7 Series for that sort of money will almost certainly be a high mileage thirsty money pit.

Bare in mind I dont want the car to keep, just something for the rest of the winter as a fun runabout.

A lazy 540 auto would be good as a winter run about. Not great on fuel though.
I think a manual 540i is likely to be my next BMW, then LPG it. The hard bit: Finding a manual e39 or late e34 touring in a dark colour.

A 540i would be great. I could live with the fuel costs but not any major repairs.
Could I get a decent one for that price?
Ive spotted a very very nice looking 740i for 995- would that be a bad move?
I spotted this e30 aswell

I'd go for an e34. No questions about it. e39 too risky at that sort of money but you'd get a peach on an e34.

I'd love an E39 540i. My stepdad had a 530i for a while and it was lovely (although I never drove it, I was only about 15...)
Not in E30s any more

E39 540 manual is pretty much the same economy as an E30 325 in normal speed driving but is more extreme at the two ends of the spectrum. When you really go for it you can drink fuel at a truly amazing rate - I burnt half a tank in 20 minutes on country roads and beat the TomTom arrival time by 40 minutes
If you use the cruise control and stick under 80 on the motorway you'll get about 400 miles from the (70 litre) tank but you have to try hard to get that economy.
Jon, keep looking. They only built 70 RHD 540i tourings in manual during the entire run, and there's definitely one written off

E30 Touring 0.35 cD - more slippery than prison soap

Morat is talking about e39's. I know this is I gave him a car when some chump ran straight into the back of his e39 manual 540 touring.Simon13 wrote:morat they only built 35 rhd manual e34 540i tourings! they're rare in any guise!
There was a manual e34 calypso red man touring for sale about 8 months ago for £750 with a bit of a dent in the rear 1/4. Shit, I should have bought it.

I'm thinking of spending about this kind of money on an E38 right now, so that'd be my suggestion! I've found a few 735s for sale at this kind of cash, and they don't seem to be old knackers either.
Only problem is if they do go wrong it'll cost.

Either a e36 touring or a e30 touring, or e34 535i sport. Most likely the e34
