just a different trim level, on other makes you might get boggo, popular, popular plus, on e30s you got boggo, lux, se
basically the same as a modern trim package, where it's often cheaper to pay the extra for the pack, than to specify the options that make that pack up individually and add it to a basic car.
no performance or handling improvements at all between a 325i and a 325ise afaik.
i'm sure someone will be allong soon who knows exactly what the se trim level included
