Glad you said it mate, 160bhp seemed ambitious!!Jon_Bmw wrote:Cough, 160, BS, Cough!
The only way I think you can get an m42 to that level is a 1.9litre bottom end, custom management and some tweeking on the cam timing. I never 'got' BBTB's. Sheps had a customer with the above setup and it broke over 160 IIRC, but this is far from a simple chip and BadBorethrottlebody.
Can't believe the number of cheap(ish) IS's about here, some in lovely knick too!! I thought these were a little more desireable than that! Though it seems some of you have benefitted from a sellers ignorance; fair play!

There it is, no definite answers as to whether it actually works but the principle seems fair enough.
I was probably a bit over the top with my 160bhp comment, I'm a deluded 4potterer after all, leave me alone

Basically the plates in the TB aren't parallel, so when one is at true WOT, the other will be at the wrong angle, reducing airflow as if it wasn't at WOT. Probably isn't necessary to go to the effort of changing it on its own, but worth considering if you're planning on rebuilding your TB yourself.
Every little helps and all that

That's one of my next things to do also, along with the rocker cover gasket and fuel hoses. Should also try and work out the idle issue too before it gets worse, I suspect it's just a small TPS issue.

dont know if this is the same thing but my step dads touring when you first start it the revs go up back down nearly stalling then it idles properly, would that be a TPS sensorGrindCulture wrote:That's one of my next things to do also, along with the rocker cover gasket and fuel hoses. That's what mine does, and checking the TPS was what was recommended to me as well as checking the vacuum pipes.Alex wrote:dont know if this is the same thing but my step dads touring when you first start it the revs go up back down nearly stalling then it idles properly, would that be a TPS sensorGrindCulture wrote:That's one of my next things to do also, along with the rocker cover gasket and fuel hoses. Sorry to high jack this thread lol.
As for bargains the car pictured under my name was a 12month MOT bargain for £700 in 2006. Very dirty and covered in dog hair! A days cleaning later and it was very presentable. Alex that car you got was it won on ebay? I almost bid on it, just text and 1 picture in the advert and from a trader? Think it finished mid day and mid week otherwise it would have gone for more!
Cheers

its getting 15" bbs on it now, just fitted the first one today, the wheel nuts are that hard to get off o could not use my wheel brace and broke 3 wratchets including a halfrauds professional one that ive just baught
also is 20 quid expensive to get 2 tyres fitted and balanced that i supplied, i think ive been ripped off
Doesn't sound like a rip off to me, £10 each is the going rate round my bit for a garage to do it, £8 for a steelie
my nieghbour is a tyre fitter,,,,free gratis
i used to pay £5 a wheel if i supply the tyre.
but not been there in 3 yrs so it would've gone up.

That was my car, it made 161bhp with M44 bottom end, kent cams, performance exhaust and Megasquirt. It's running 155bhp at the moment as I went back to the standard BMW ecu as it runs loads smoother and does much better mpg - got 40mpg recently on a long run. I reckon with an Evolve chip though it would do the same power as the megasquirt and have the smoothness and fuel economy of the OEM map so could be interesting to try.Jon_Bmw wrote:Cough, 160, BS, Cough!

Rossmc88 and GBE30 - just noticed this thread and that you guys are interested in buying 318is. My 318is is going to be for sale very soon, it's a really tidy example, if either of you guys want any more info on the car let me know and I'll tell you about it.
Simon
Never got a chance to have a chat on the day I don't think Simon. I was there in the grey 205. Interestingly 163bhp was what my factory 1.9 16v produced, but pug wrongness! Its soon to get a LSD and a spikey inlet cam to get that to around 185bhp all being well.
Twas a nice car and a good prospective buy for someone on here. To the naughty members, simon spec sheet couldn't really be spotted by an insurance company without a full stripdown or time with the engine.

Sounds tasty! I'm very tempted to buy another iS at some point for a bit of track/weekend fun, but I can't see myself tuning the M42 that's currently in the touring.batman861 wrote:That was my car, it made 161bhp with M44 bottom end, kent cams, performance exhaust and Megasquirt. Have you thought of going for a custom mapped piggyback ECU rather than full standalone or an off the shelf chip?

It's still as revvy with the M44 in. The M42 head breathes very well as it has big valves for the size of the engine, so not a restriction at all.
I remember your 205 Jon. Looked like a good fun track car, should be really quick with 185bhp too.
I did think about piggyback ECU, but they're expensive, and I think an Evolve chip would be almost as good for a fraction of the price.
