Typical isn't it, my new smoked hellas have got a stonechip which has cracked the glass of one of the main beam lamps.
Does anyone know where I can get a single replacement lamp without having to buy an entire new set?

Adam, you're best bet is to remove the glass from a spare set of lamps, or buy a new insert (comes with the glass and reflector) as Missy suggested.

As far as I can see, the smoked hellas are basically standard e30 lights but with the smoked inserts. I think someone mentioned the mouting tabs are in different places between bosch glass and hella glass.ian332isport wrote:Do replacement smoked Hella inserts fit in regular E30 housings ?

But compared to the price of a full set of Smoked Hella's, it's quite a lot cheaper. I'm not sure what the going rate is for a set, but it's got to be more than Ԛ£120.Karan wrote:those inserts woyld be round Ԛ£60 for a pair..... thats a lot of cash!

Yes the glass lenses are interchangable between hella and bosch provided thay are both from a projector light (the main beam lights are the same lens on all E30,s E34's and older (E32??) 7 series.
but as mentioned the glass tabs are in different places and the diameters are slightly different. but easyily fixed by filing a new slot in the headlight assembly in the right location. Hella glass diameter is slightly bigger so if you have hella units the bosch lens should be easy to fit and finally here is a picture of hella main beam lens in a bosch housing (the rear one)

You say that the glass diameter is bigger on the Hellas. Does this stop you from using the Bosch (or original BMW) trim rings ?

Ah ha i tried to foreat about that!!!!
yes if you put hella glass in a bosch housing as i said it needs a little bit of pursuasion and filing, but the outer ring was a son of a female dog!! but to answer it WILL go on, but difficult brute force only way!!!
if you are doing it the other way round that is bosch lenses into hella housing which is what adam wants to do that should be easier and only require filing to allow the glass tab to locate correctly, the rings should go on easy if not a bit too loose, a drop of black silicone should be the order of the day in that case,
oh and if i am talking out my arse i apologise as i have never seen a hella unit but i have done it to a bosch unit!!! and i am assuming they are similar!!!
i see also you were mentioning inserts, on smoked lights it is the insert only that is coloured, if you go to tech article section i wrote a article on DIY smoked lights it will explain (hopefully) all!!!

Hi Karan,Karan wrote:Ian ures will look the nuts with smoked hellas!
That's what I was thinking as well
I fancy smoked Hella's and smoked indicators (already got smoked repeaters). Smoked Fog's would be good as well, but I have never seen those
How's the M5 conversion coming along, or are you still taking exams ?

thak god for that!
conversion going well although the engine is really big and im still faffing around trying to get it straigjht and lined up in the very rearward possition 3..... its in at the moment, but wiith mine i have to keep on taking it out and putting it back in to make adjustments,,, and it isnt easy attaching the box from under the car cos of limited space..... much harder than an m20... so its all very very time consuming... once engine and box are all aligned properly and bodywork on bulkjead sorted... thinhgs should fly together.. as this repeated engine and box fitting is very tedious and i cant do it myself so have t0o wait til my dad is around....
cant wait to get it done after seeing a tourer with a similar conversion in the flesh... the noise and way the thing went were unbeliveable
cheers
Karan

was gonna smoke my fogs next, the idea was to open the lightunit and put a piece of black aluminium gauze in there against the inside of the glass, will cut down the light a bit i am sure but not too much. will let you know if it works!!
