imo id say the M50 was the best (early non vanos 2.5) also this debate is about the non ///M engined cars. blast away!

We all know old BMW engines are the most reliable.

I've had two 318i covering 5 'n half years and neither of them, touch wood, have let me down..apart from a battery dying once(not the engines' fault!)...

M30b35 is what i've heard, i think the term "Bulletproof" is often used to describe these engines

If you Got "Haters",Then your doing something Right!

well im going to punt for a m20... this may sound crazy but its the only bmw engines iv owned.. they have given me zero grief(well i say zero grief there is still a slight murmer on the idle... you can hear the @ucker... ask beemerlad i took him out in it and i have to get a clip for the fuel hose because the other is fucked) and have never let me down... although i do change the coolant every 6 months!.. and i do mean 6 months with bmw's coolant... no cheap shit... bmw shit.

I thought the M20/B20 was indestructable after the untold abuse mine had,
on the other hand i thought the B25 would be equally reliable, until this happened at 5K!

along with cracking heads ive lost all faith in the M20!
M10/M30 are well known to be bomb proof.

M43 8v. A superb little engine that's only real weakness is the occassional head gasket due to coolant neglect. BMW's last engine that could be easily fixed before they became disposable lumps.
